Doctoral position in Health Care Sciences 

Project title: Identifying key components in transition programs towards Good Quality Local Health Care: Evaluation of two approaches to support implementation efforts

The Department of Learning and leadership for health care professionals is located at the Institute of Health and Care Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg.

The doctoral student within this project will be part of the research school SHIFT CARE – Swedish research school in Integrated CARE for Future Teachers. SHIFT CARE is a national research school jointly run by four universities: University of Gothenburg, University of Borås, University of Skövde and University West, which is now recruiting several PhD students. SHIFT CARE is funded by the Swedish Research Council and is the first research school in Sweden with a focus on knowledge development that, through learning and research, supports the transition to Integrated care for people of different ages with complex care needs. A cornerstone is to prepare doctoral students to become active in education after graduation, with a focus on integrated care, at universities and within different healthcare levels. The research school’s programme consists of two mandatory courses, optional courses, seminars, retreats, and the opportunity for international internship exchange, which runs parallel to the regular PhD programme. The PhD education in Health Care Sciences comprises carrying out a scientific project and completing at least 30 credits of courses at third-cycle level. Project: The transition towards person-centred care is a challenging process. Hence, there is a need to evaluate and develop interventions aimed to facilitate the implementation of person-centred approaches among co-workers and leaders. The overarching aim with this research is to identify key-components in transition programs towards Good Quality Local Health Care [Nära Vård] to best support implementation efforts. The PhD-project will be conducted based on two implementation projects. The project is expected to contribute to in-depth knowledge in the areas person-centred learning, implementation, and leadership.

A mixed-method approach will be applied, offering training in both qualitative and quantitative methods. Proposed study designs are Grounded Theory to explore learning processes in each implementation programme (sub-studies I and III) and mixed-methods to evaluate how a person-centred approach is practiced (sub-studies II and IV). You will be part of a research group with broad competence and experience in person-centeredness, leadership and organisation, as well as implementation research. We are looking for a PhD candidate with a keen interest in and/or experience of developing working methods in health and social care to promote the health of both patients and employees, as well as interest in pedagogy. Good collaborative skills as well as the ability to independently plan and complete work tasks is desirable. Furthermore, strong ability in Swedish oral communication and in both written Swedish and English is necessary. The project requires that the doctoral student will be able to conduct interviews and analyses in Swedish. 

Education at third-cycle level comprises four years of full-time study, and leads to a doctoral degree. As part of your employment as a doctoral student, you may have departmental duties corresponding to up to 20 % of full-time employment, distributed throughout your study period. Departmental duties usually consist of teaching at first- and second-cycle levels, but may also include research and administration.    


Education at third-cycle level requires general eligibility and specific eligibility as set out in the general syllabus for the subject.  

The general eligibility requirements for education at third-cycle level are:    1. having completed a degree at second-cycle level, or2. the fulfilment of course requirements totalling at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle level, or  3. the acquisition of equivalent knowledge in some other way, either in Sweden or abroad.   Specific entry requirements for this subject, according to the general syllabus, are: having completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies.    

Assessment criteria   

The selection of applicants who are considered to have the ability required to benefit from the study programme and who meet the general and specific eligibility requirements are assessed based on the following documented qualifications:- specific knowledge and skills within the subject area and related research fields- experience of scientific theory and relevant research methodology- scientific analysis and presentation verified through thesis, degree project, scientific journals or the like. 

Documented experience of working close to patients in the field/s relevant to the research project is meritourious, as is experience of scientific work and research relevant to the research project. Documented experience in teaching and/or supervision is desirable.    


Once you have been admitted for education at third-cycle level, you will be employed as a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg. The provisions for employment as a doctoral student can be found in ordinance SFS 1993:100. Initial employment as a doctoral student may apply for a maximum of one year, and may be renewed by a maximum of two years at a time. A doctoral student may be employed as a doctoral student for a maximum of eight years, but the total period of employment may not be longer than the equivalent of full-time education at third-cycle level for four years.
