About the Cosmic Origin Program
CICO: CHALMERS Initiative on Cosmic Origins
A research initiative hosted by the Dept. of Space, Earth and Environment, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg and Onsala Space Observatory, Onsala, Sweden, focused on Cosmic Origins Science. We address fundamental questions about the formation of galaxies, stars, planets and life in the Universe.
CICO has been established at the end of 2017 with the arrival of Professor Jonathan C. Tan and Assistant Professor Jouni Kainulainen. CICO has formed strategic international partnerships with the Department of Astronomy at the University of Virginia (Tan group), the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (Caselli group) and the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (Kainulainen group). For more information about CICO and its activities please contact Tan and/or Kainulainen.
The Astronomy and Plasma Physics (AoP) division is the centre for Astrophysics research at Chalmers University and is the primary host of the Chalmers Initiative on Cosmic Origins (CICO). AoP personnel are situated at the main Johanneberg Campus and at Onsala Space Observatory (OSO), which is the Swedish national facility for Radio Astronomy. The observatory operates telescopes in Sweden, shares in the APEX telescope in Chile, hosts the Nordic ALMA Regional Center (ARC), and is the SKA center for Sweden. The research activities at Chalmers are very broad, including interstellar medium studies, astrochemistry, star and planet formation, exoplanets, evolved stars, observational cosmology, and galaxy formation and evolution.
VICO: VIRGINIA Initiative on Cosmic Origins
A research initiative hosted by the Depts. of Astronomy, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Sciences, and Materials Science & Engineering at the University of Virginia and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, Charlottesville, VA, USA, focused on Cosmic Origins Science. We address fundamental questions about the formation of galaxies, stars, planets and life in the Universe.
VICO has been established in 2017 with support from the University of Virginia Strategic Investment Fund (PI: Prof. Eric Herbst) and the arrivals of Professor Jonathan C. Tan and Assistant Professor Ilse Cleeves. VICO has formed strategic international partnerships with the Chalmers Initiative on Cosmic Origins (CICO) and the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (Caselli group). For more information about VICO and its activities please contact Herbst and/or Tan.
