Qualification Details

  • Applicants must hold a Master of Science (120 ECTS) in marketing, business, management, or equivalent with documented command of research methodology with average grade B or higher.
  • The degree must be accomplished before the commencement date.
  • Highly qualified candidates with other educational backgrounds may be considered. Candidates with other backgrounds must at a minimum have a master level course in research methods and a master level course in their main field of  study.
  • Applicants with MSc degrees from institutions outside Europe must document GMAT results of a minimum of 600 points (or GRE equivalent). Candidates must have an excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • The candidate must have the ability to work independently and at the same time have the motivation to share knowledge and take part in team work. Research and project work experience and publication record are desirable.
  • Personal suitability for the post will be emphasised.
  • Co-operation between staff members is an integral part of the working environment at the University of South-Eastern Norway. The candidate must be motivated and demonstrate a proven ability to work effectively within a team and in a collegiate manner to formulate and realise common objectives.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The PhD-position will work with researchers from the research groups in Management Information Systems and Organization and Leadership at USN School of Business. Among other topics, the group holds an extensive research portfolio on application of virtual technologies as well as the theory of affordance.

About the Project

The PhD project will focus on the various action possibilities of virtual reality regarding virtual collaboration. The consequences of digitalization are manifesting in organizations and society, including the way we perform our tasks. The recent name change of Facebook to Metaverse is an example of the increasing importance of future virtual space for jobs and collaboration. To provide future workforce with required skills, the project will investigate how virtual teams work and collaborate in an extended reality (XR) environment to achieve common goals. The theory of affordance is particularly useful in explaining the action possibilities of virtual technologies and explore what facilitating conditions are needed to actualize those action possibilities.

Potential research questions include, but are not limited to:

RQ1: How do virtual teams collaborate using extended reality?

RQ2: How do virtual teams perform using extended reality?

RQ3: What technological functionalities are important for efficient virtual team collaboration using extended reality?

RQ4: How can an organization facilitate virtual team collaboration through extended reality?

An exploratory multi-method research approach is appropriate to understand and explore how virtual team members work and collaborate within a virtual environment such as XR. Through using both participant observation and in-depth interviews, the data provides both the spoken description of how team members experience XR, while having the opportunity to observe and note the same experiences. The project can also apply action design research approach.

The applicant must be familiar with theoretical perspectives of organizational theory, and/or management, and relevant methods (both qualitative and quantitative research methods).

PhD Research Fellow (code 1017): NOK 491 200 a year. Further promotion will be based on time served in the position.

A statutory contribution to the state pension plan will be deducted from the employee’s salary.
