Qualification Details

  • A PhD degree in a relevant topic, with an excellent track-record (according to career stage) demonstrated by high-quality research output;
  • A proven track record of working with photonic integration technology, and/or the clear ambition to develop oneself in such a direction;
  • A clear and ambitious research vision and teaching vision;
  • Excellent communication, organization skills, and leadership skills;
  • Strong cooperation skills and the ability to work in teams.
  • Ability to teach or, assist in the teaching process, shown by experience as well as positive evaluations of these teaching efforts.
  • Experience in acquiring external research funding from (inter-)national funding bodies or, industry is an asset.
  • Excellent proficiency (written and verbal) in English

Responsibilities/Job Description

Are you a passionate researcher in the field of photonic integration looking for a new challenge?  We have an open position for someone to complement our existing efforts in (mostly) InP-based photonic integration. Areas of interest include, though not exclusively, new technologies, such as heterogeneous integration, also including other III-V materials like GaN and GaAs, heteroepitaxy on silicon substrates, nanophotonic structures, including nanolasers, topological insulators, nonlinear materials, and plasmonics, and electronic-photonic integration.  You are encouraged to seek for synergy with the Nanolab infrastructure, which includes, a.o., a unique 4” InP Pilot Line, for highly robust and reproducible epitaxial growth and processing. Areas of interest also include the link with applications, such as sensing and metrology, quantum technologies, communications, and computing.

The candidate is expected to set up an independent research profile in such an area, supervise PhD students and postdocs, and contribute to the education at BSc and MSc level.


Photonic integration is the technology to combine various optical components, such as lasers, photodetectors, modulators, filters and waveguides, on a single substrate, thereby creating a photonic integrated circuit, or optical chip. Applications can traditionally be found in communications, but over the last decade, applications in sensing, metrology, lidar, and (quantum, neuromorphic, optical) computing have strongly emerged, also in industry. The main technology trends are towards higher electrical (modulation) bandwidths, lower-loss and more robust circuits, wider wavelength-range coverage, further miniaturization and integration density, and closer integration with electronics.

About the Department/Section/Group

The Photonic Integration group at TU/e has a long track record of setting pioneering results in indium phosphide (InP) based photonic integration.  Our group consists of approximately 55 members, including 8 permanent faculty members. We are a key player in the field, as evidenced by our founding and coordinating role in the globally-leading Joint European Platform for photonic integrated components and circuits JePPIX.  We take a leading role in driving InP-based photonic integration towards the next level. A key enabler for our work is our Nanolab cleanroom facility, which specializes in III-V processing.


Our group is part of the Department of Electrical Engineering, which is one of the nine departments at TU/e. It employs 892 staff members and has 1.130 BSc/MSc students, making it the largest electrical engineering education in the Netherlands. The working language, including education, is English.


The Photonic Integration group is part of the recently established Eindhoven Hendrik Casimir Institute, focusing on exponential technologies, most notably photonics and quantum technology, for a sustainable information society. The EHCI brings together researchers from various Departments, to stimulate collaboration and synergetic research, and to create joint roadmaps for strategic investments. It is one of the only four TU/e institutes, showing the clear commitment of our university to photonics as a main strategy for excellent research and valorisation.

Brainport region

TU/e is located at the heart of the Eindhoven Brainport region, a high-tech ecosystem, which includes multinationals like ASML, Philips, NXP, and Signify, institutes like imec and Holst Center, and stale-ups like SMART Photonics, EFFECT Photonics and PhotonFirst.
