Responsibilities/Job Description

The Synchrotron Radiation Monitor (SRM) - installed in BC1 of SwissFEL - permits a fully non-invasive imaging in the visible of the edge synchrotron radiation (SR) emitted by the electron beam at the entrance of the third dipole of the chicane. From the knowledge of the dispersion of the magnetic chicane, the analysis of the horizontal distribution of the acquired SR images of the beam permits to determine the central energy and energy spread of the beam. The acquisition of the BC1-SRM images is beam-synchronous at a repetition rate of 100 Hz. Moreover, thanks to a fast gated MCP, the BC1-SRM camera is able to discriminate either the first or the second bunch in the 28ns long beam macro-structure. Possible application of this non-invasive monitor concerns the optimization of the compression phase of the off-crest RF structures of the injector as well as the phase of the X-band linearizer. Recently, it was also demonstrated how to estimate the electron bunch length from the beam synchronous acquisition of the BC1-SRM images and the parameters (phase and amplitude) of the RF structures of the injector. In conclusion, the potentialities of the BC1-SRM in optimizing the RF parameters of the linearized compression in the SwissFEL injector together with the most recently demonstrated potentiality in determining the bunch length permit to envisage a possible machine learning application from the analysis of the beam energy distribution measured by the SRM at the BC1 chicane.
