Qualification Details

  •     PhD related to AI from any discipline
  •     A clear affinity with and interest in any application within health systems. Experience in this domain is considered a plus.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The Multi-Actor Department (MAS) invites applicants for an Assistant Professorship that will contribute to its research on sociotechnical systems, specifically AI for health systems. In the department we want to improve our understanding of how decision-making, change and coordination of and within sociotechnical systems, happen in order to design systems that do justice to the multiple values that modern societies require, and to provide actors within these systems with the necessary perspective to act.

In recent years both AI and health systems have become more important in our research. AI, data and digitization involve major technological developments with urgent societal implications. AI techniques are increasingly being deployed in sociotechnical systems, leading to new opportunities as well as new societal challenges. Health systems are an example of sociotechnical systems: complex systems where technology and people meet. This intersection manifests itself in various parts of health systems, including public policy decision-making, coordination across health providers, supply chain of products or services, and analytics within health providers to support clinical care.

Prospective candidates can work on any aspect or application of AI within health systems, such as those exemplified above. However, they need to be able to connect their own research to the sociotechnical systems' characteristics of health systems, and the associated challenges this may bring. This includes the multi-actor environments in which decisions about clinical care take place, the complex policy implications and decisions for delivering care, ethical implications of health data and privacy, among many others. You will contribute to the academic challenges that AI and health systems give rise to, as well as address the societal challenges that AI systems deployed in health systems bring, such as inherent power asymmetries, and potential justice and privacy challenges. Hence, AI is the subject as well as the object of our research.

The department wants to strengthen its position in AI education. Indeed we believe that AI is essential for new generations of TPM engineers. You will take the lead in developing the AI components of our educational programs. This requires setting up courses that add synergistically to the existing learning lines, as well as coordinating a coherent vision on AI education. It is expected of the candidate to propose a vision on education in AI as well, considering the context described above.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. In the fifth year we’ll decide if you will be offered a permanent faculty position, based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment. We expect that you have the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future.
