Qualification Details

The successful candidate holds a PhD in philosophy. They are committed, engaging and capable teachers, as demonstrated by prior teaching experience and/or a sample lecture (if invited to an interview). They enjoy and are capable of teaching philosophy to both philosophers and non-philosophers. We welcome candidates that can teach subjects outside their areas of specialization. We welcome applications from teachers with a PhD specialization from various philosophical traditions, including but not limited to analytic and continental philosophy.

Responsibilities/Job Description

Area of Competence (AoC) 1

(Organization) ethics, social philosophy, practical philosophy, history of philosophyThe successful candidate will coordinate or be involved in teaching major courses on ethics, and social philosophy or philosophy of culture in non-philosophy Bachelor programs. The candidate will also teach courses in ethics, history of philosophy and/or social philosophy in the Philosophy BA or MA Programs. Thesis supervision will also be part of their tasks. Fluency in Dutch (C2) is a strong advantage for this position.

Area of Competence (AoC) 2

Philosophy of (data) science, epistemology, philosophy of mind or theoretical philosophy.The successful candidate will coordinate or be involved in teaching major courses on Philosophy of science and/or Philosophy of mind courses in non-philosophy Bachelor programs. The successful candidate will also teach on their area of competence in the Master and Bachelor philosophy program. Thesis supervision will also be part of their tasks. Fluency in Dutch (C2) is an advantage for this position.

  4. a sample syllabus for a 6 ECTS compulsory Philosophy course aimed at 2nd year Bachelor students of either Communication and Information Sciences or Social Sciences (the syllabus need not be more than 2 pages); always indicate the target student audience clearly at the top of the sample syllabus.
  5. a writing sample, which may also be a chapter from the PhD thesis.

Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences

Research and education at the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences (TSHD) has a unique focus on humans in the context of the globalizing digital society, on the development of artificial intelligence and interactive technologies, on their impact on communication, culture and society, and on moral and existential challenges that arise. The School of Humanities and Digital Sciences consists of four departments: Communication and Cognition, Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence, Culture Studies and Philosophy; several research institutes and a faculty office. Also the University College Tilburg is part of the School. Each year around 275 students commence a Bachelor or (Pre) Master Program. The School has approximately 2000 students and 250 employees.

The Department The Department of Philosophy (DFI) at Tilburg University is both an important center of academic teaching and internationally recognized for its research. The Philosophy Department at Tilburg University seeks to appoint one or two philosophers at the level of teacher (Dutch: Docent Filosofie). Both positions include teaching (70-75 %) and teaching-related research responsibilities (20%) as well as management or academic citizenship tasks (5-10 %). Teaching responsibilities include coordination of 4-5 courses per year (2-3 per semester) at both the Bachelor and Master levels. An important portion of these tasks involves teaching philosophy to non-philosophy students at Bachelor level.If not already acquired, successful candidates are expected to acquire a University Teaching Qualification (BKO). Tilburg University offers courses for acquiring this certification.

The positions will be ranked in the Dutch university job ranking system (UFO) as teacher (“docent 3”). The starting gross salary for a full-time appointment is (minimally) € 3.821,- up to (maximally) € 5.230,- per month (max  € 72.989,- all in per year). The start of the employment is negotiable, preferably 1 August, 2022. Successful candidates receive a contract for two years. When certain financial and organizational conditions are met, and if you function well, we will strive to convert the contract into a permanent contract as Assistant Professor (with 40% research time). If you function well, it will also be possible to extend your teaching contract with one year. The decision to start with a fixed-term position as Teacher is necessary in light of current Dutch labor law and internal fairness considerations.
