About the Department

At  Department of Biological Sciences (BIO) we have several projects where we see that digital tools such as web and mobile applications offer exciting solutions and can assist in both education, research and dissemination. We are looking for a software developer with skills and experience in modern technologies for web and mobile application development, and who wants to create excellent tools for research and education.

One of the projects at BIO is ArtsApp, which is a web/mobile application for species identification. The application is developed with our Centre for Excellence in Education (bioCEED), which also does research on what effect such an application has for motivation and learning outcome with the students. The person being hired for this position will have the main responsibility for further technical development of the web application, which is a progressive web app (PWA) written in React. The person will also be responsible for further development of the backend services, together with developers from the Centre of Science Education.

We have a vision to extend our use of mobile applications and other digital tools even further. As an example, we want to share knowledge to a larger crowd in engaging ways, e.g. by using gamification in mobile applications, gathering data in collaboration with people that are not affiliated with the University (citizen science), by using blockchain technology to store and share biological databases and by renewing educational methods by using digital tools (e.g. by using new methods for evaluation).

The person hired for this position will, in collaboration with the scientist and lecturers at BIO, be responsible for developing different types of applications related to the projects. The specifics of the projects will depend on what funding the projects receive. The person will be included in developing ideas for development of relevant applications for the research and educational projects.
