The Department will give priority to applicants with the following qualifications: high grades from their universities, an educational background in the social sciences, and finally, the applicants must be fluent in English.
To be considered for the 3 years program, the candidate should have a basic training at the Masters level (similar to the 3 + 2 Bologna process and a total of 180+120 ECTS). However, applicants who hold a one year Master’s degree may also be considered for evaluation. PhD students who enter the PhD program with a one year Master’s degree (60 ECTS) will be offered a 4 years program and will be considered a Master’s student for the first 2 years of the program.

About the Department
The Department of Strategy and Innovation’s (SI) research is focused on strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship and international business. The department’s ambition is to host an internationally leading environment for research and teaching within the broad area of strategy. The department’s research is generally cross-disciplinary. Faculty members have backgrounds in management, economics, sociology and economic geography. The theoretical foundation for research in these areas is eclectic, combining strategy, innovation, and/or internationalization theory with insights from economics, sociology, psychology, and economic geography. The department has 55 faculty members (professors, associate professors, tenure track assistant professors), 7 administrative staff, and 30 members of staff who are hired on temporary contracts as research assistants, post docs or PhD students.
The department puts substantial emphasis on the solid application of scientific research method. The department has a pluralistic approach to research methods that includes, for example, formal theoretical models, quantitative empirical methods such as (lab and field) experiments, econometric applications to register data or survey data, as well as qualitative research methods. PhD project proposals should be based on coherent theoretical arguments and contain well-informed methodological considerations. SI particularly invites for PhD project applications pertaining to the following broad topics, although applications that address other topics within the research scope of the department will also be considered:
Phd topics 2022 (Please indicate the number and title from the list below in your project proposal):
- Social entrepreneurship and impact investing: Increasing amounts of financial resources are committed to social enterprises (SEs) in order to tackle grand challenges and social issues. Yet, the return on this type of investments are non-clear yet. Recently, Impact Investment has tried to stimulate SEs both on social and organizational goals (i.e. hybridity) to respond to these issues. How does Impact Investing influence SEs’ strategic decision making? What are the primary and differential resources provided by impact investors? Does the hybridity change in relation to the syndication of impact investors? And how about the impact on SEs’ performance metrics?
- Digital platforms and ecosystems: How do they transform existing value chains? Digital platforms are shaking up industries by introducing innovations in market architecture – i.e., new marketplace infrastructures that offer new ways products and services are connected, accessed and consumed. This can represent new opportunities for incumbent firms in a sector, but alter significantly existing value chains and erode the value of incumbents’ assets and their sources of competitive advantage. One question in this context concerns how platform market architecture innovations affect the value of incumbents’ core and complementary assets.
- Corporate venturing strategies and performance: Corporations have increasingly committed more capital to invest in startups, with the idea to combine the traditional venture capital business model with their strategic organizational objectives, positioning CVC units as a key institutional partner for startups’ development and success. Yet, there are still underexplored questions: how are CVC units formed, organized, and managed, what is the role of co-investing with other CVCs, what are the complementary assets made available that matter the most for the strategic success of CVC as a growth strategy? And, importantly, what are the performance implications for investing corporations and investee startups?
- Firm strategies for addressing grand challenges: At the heart of this PhD project is a Big Data approach for identifying distinct innovation and hiring strategies of firms developing solutions to the Grand Challenges of society, such as climate change, poverty or equality.
- The role of innovation hubs for firm performance: In recent years, many firms have established “Innovation Hubs” – organizationally separate units that are supposed to engage in exploration, generate inputs for radical innovation, and strengthen the firm’s innovation capacity. However, we know little about their effectiveness. This dissertation project aims at investigating the antecedents, boundary conditions and effects of Innovation Hubs, using a mix of qualitative and quantitative data analysis and experimental methods.
- Financial markets and corporate innovation: There is growing evidence that financial markets have an active influence on firms’ investment decisions. Prior studies have shown that ownership structure, intermediaries and the institutional environment can affect investments in innovation and innovation efficiency. However, it remains an open question whether firms’ innovation strategies are affected. For instance, do financial markets influence the relative balance of internal R&D and external knowledge sourcing (e.g. M&A or alliances). This project aims to provide novel insights on the relationship between financial markets and the innovation strategies of large, publicly listed firms.
- Emerging market firms and global environmental requirements. Global environmental requirements are pressing also firms located in emerging markets. How can these firms acquire the skills and competencies required to meet higher environmental standards? What is the role of foreign direct investments or collaborations with multinational corporations? Can immigrants returning to their countries of origin be helpful for emerging market firms in addressing fundamental environmental changes?
- Women’s careers in invention: Inventors are key drivers of innovation and technology, but women are still severely underrepresented in these activities. Much has been written about how women in STEM fields are treated by others. What we still know far too little about are the motivations and career decisions of women themselves (compared to men) and what influences them. Examples include deciding to pursue a particular education, starting a career as an inventor and focusing on a particular field, making career-related decisions such as changing employers, or even dropping out of inventive activity. The project could involve both qualitative and quantitative approaches, including the use of existing large-scale quantitative data on Danish and European inventors.
- Project proposals within the area of the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Endowed Chair of Entrepreneurship (www.cbs.dk/entrepreneurshipchair):
- A. Immigrant entrepreneurship: While most migrants seek paid jobs in the countries they migrate to, a large proportion of immigrants start their own businesses. What leads them to create such businesses? One view proposes that migrants resort to entrepreneurship because they find it more difficult to integrate in the host country labor market. Another view suggests that they may have special abilities to identify opportunities that locals are not able to spot or benefit from having networks in both the host and home country. This project will investigate the conditions under which one or the other views tend to prevail by using quantitative methods to analyze large-scale Danish micro-data.
- B. Organizations supporting entrepreneurship. Creating new businesses is challenging and several organizations attempt to help potential entrepreneurs to overcome the obstacles to business creation by contributing with advice and funding, among others. These organizations are promoted by different types of institutions (governments, non-governmental organizations, private companies) and assume different forms to support external initiatives (incubators, accelerators, business angels, venture capitalists, etc.) but also to develop within-company initiatives. This project will study how these organizations select the ventures/entrepreneurs to be supported, the assistance they provide, and their success.
- C. How do entrepreneurs mobilize human capital resources for their ventures? Founders and startups get most of the attention in academic, public, and policy debates. However, for every founder, there are often several early employees taking nearly equal risks by joining an early-stage company.Mobilizing human resources to startups is nevertheless challenging. This project focuses on specific factors that may explain how entrepreneurs mobilize personnel for their ventures and the implications of hiring strategies for new venture performance. It will rely on quantitative methods using Danish register data.
About the PhD program
The three-year PhD program at CBS allows you to conduct research under the supervision of CBS professors, supported by research training courses. The program is highly international, and you are expected to participate in international research conferences and to spend time abroad as a visiting PhD student.
The PhD student will be enrolled in the CBS PhD School. The selected candidates will participate in the SI PhD cohort, which is a formal research-training program. This includes a package of foundational courses within the main SI research areas and methods courses (econometrics, experiments and qualitative methods).
CBS PhD graduates are held in high esteem not only in academia and research institutions but also in government and business where their research qualifications are increasingly demanded. Recent SI PhD graduates have been successfully placed at institutions such as Pompeu Fabra, SKEMA, KTH, EPFL, Leeds University Business School, and the University of Utah.

The PhD scholarship includes teaching obligations.
The 3 years scholarships are fully salaried positions, according to the national Danish collective agreement. The scholarship includes the tuition fees, office space, travel grants plus a salary, currently starting with per month app. DKK 28,000 (app. 3,700 euro) up to DKK 31,600 (app. 4,200 euro), depending on seniority, plus a pension contribution totaling 17.1% of the base salary.
The salary level and appointment is determined by the Ministry of Finance’s collective agreement with the Central Academic Organization.
Recruitment procedureThe Recruitment Committee will shortlist a number of applicants to be assessed by the Assessment Committee. All applicants will be notified of their status in the recruitment process shortly after the application deadline.
Applicants selected for assessment will be notified about the composition of the Assessment Committee and later in the process about the result of the assessment.
Once the recruitment process is completed each applicant will be notified of the outcome of their application.
