Qualification Details

Doctoral degree with a focus on microsystem technology. We require knowledge and experience of patterning of liquid metal.

We require good oral and written knowledge of English.

Additional qualifications: It is a merit to have knowledge and experience in the manufacture of microsystems in soft materials, and especially then for stretchable electronics.

You must be purposeful, structured and be able to work effectively both individually and in groups.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The Division of Microsystems Technology at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering conducts research on the use of microsystems in a variety of scientific fields, from medical technology to space technology. Our strength lies in working with very small mechanical systems, the electromechanical properties of the materials, manufacturing, design, simulation and mechatronics. Common to all research is the desire to investigate how the properties of systems change when they are made smaller, and how these properties can be used to create simpler, cheaper and above all more functional technology.

Project description: Four of the department's projects are about technology development of microfluidic extensible electronics - circuit boards, sensors and actuators. An extensible substrate based on a new soft and extensible silicone material enables compatible, comfortable, smart and wireless patches that do not move in relation to the tissue even with larger movements. These smart patches are used on the skin for health, sports and medical technology. We have developed the basic technology for stretchable circuit boards, where liquid-based alloys allow rigid components to be embedded without contact errors during prolonged dynamic stretching.

Within the projects, we work with medical technology and micro-robotics with partners in Europe, but most intensively with partners at our university, KTH and the company Mycronic in Täby.

Work duties: Research in the subject. The work is based on our previous research and is about developing new ways to pattern stretchable electronics with metal that is liquid at room temperature. The work includes a wide range of scientific areas with a focus on microsystem technology, but also connects to wireless technology and its applications. The work will be carried out in a very interdisciplinary environment where close collaboration with companies is an important prerequisite.
