Qualification Details

The following requirements are necessary for the position:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant area such as engineering cybernetics.
  • Documented UAS operation/piloting experience, including fixed-wing UAV
  • Research experience on guidance, navigation and control (GNC) for UAS.
  • Relevant competence on embedded and real-time systems, Linux, electronics, and programming in C/C++.
  • Excellent communication skills in English both orally and in writing.
  • Good communication skills in Norwegian both orally and in writing.
  • Valid driver’s license in Norway equivalent to class B.

The autonomous vehicle research at NTNU has civilian objectives. However, some of the equipment being used is subject to export regulations or other limitations such as ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations), and the position requires that the applicant has permission to use such equipment. Applicants who are citizens of Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Sweden or NATO countries will satisfy the requirements.

Preferred selection criteria

  • Experience with the UAS used at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics at NTNU, including ArduPilot- and PixHawk-based avionics, autopilots and flight management systems
  • Experience with LSTS toolchain and ROS (Robotic Operating System).
  • Experience with student supervision.
  • Experience with project work and coordination.
  • Doctoral degree in a relevant area such as engineering cybernetics.

Personal characteristics

It is important that the person being hired is systematic, can contribute to management and administrative work, has good collaboration skills, and will enjoy working with both employees and students. It is also important that this person is flexible, can work efficiently in multiple projects at the same time, shows willingness to take initiative and responsibility, and contribute with creative solutions in exciting research projects.

The work environment is international and the successful candidate must have excellent communication skills in English both orally and in writing, as well as master Norwegian or be prepared to learn Norwegian.

Some travelling must be expected in connection with field operations and testing.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The researcher will participate in various projects related to technology development and applications of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and systems. The position will involve research as well as technical and operational services and support to the research team and students. This includes technical responsibilities for avionics and payloads, and UAS piloting in collaboration with the UAV-lab’s operational team.Many of the projects will involve close collaboration within the department, students, other parts of NTNU, external research partners, industry and end users.

The main work tasks will be:

  • Research and development related to UAV navigation, control, instruments, payloads, applications.
  • Technical development and maintenance of NTNU’s UAS and infrastructure for research and flight operations (hardware/software/payloads/avionics/systems)
  • UAV operator/pilot. This includes field operations, risk assessment (SORA) of operations, applications for specific operations, and documentation of UAS operations required by CAA (Luftfartstilsynet)
  • Project management, planning, coordination, risk and quality management.
  • Publication, dissemination and public outreach.

The position will also contribute to other tasks related to the department’s ongoing research and education activities. The working area of the position can change in order to serve the department’s needs.

About the Position

Engineering cybernetics is about automatic control and monitoring of technical and natural systems. This field is at the front of the technological development, where research on UAS is rooted in the strategic area of autonomous systems at the Faculty for Information Technologies and Electrical Engineering at NTNU.

The workplace is at NTNU Gløshaugen, Trondheim. The position is associated with NTNU’s UAV-lab and the Centre for Autonomous Marine Operations and Systems (AMOS).

You will report to the head of department.
