Qualification Details

  • Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within meteorology, numerical fluid mechanics with focus on wind, applied mathematics or similar; or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition for employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • The candidate must have good knowledge in atmospheric boundary layer dynamics and WRF mesoscale modelling.
  • The candidate should have very good skills in programming (e.g. FORTRAN, Python, MATLAB, particularly parallel computing on Linux and supercomputer system).
  • The candidate should have skills within signal processing and statistics to analyse modelled and measured datasets.
  • It is an advantage that the applicant has good skills in working with wind models and high-fidelity models such as large eddy simulation (LES) tools with focus on wind energy.
  • Experience in data assimilation and the relevant uncertainty analyses are considered as advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills. Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.
  • Candidate should demonstrate a strong curiosity and self-driven attitude to explore and implement new methods and ideas.
  • Since CONWIND is a collaborative project with China, we expect that the candidate could participate in research visits in China over the period of the project.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The tasks of the researcher position are:

(1) Simulate the wind fields around and inside the wind farm under various atmospheric stability conditions using mesoscale WRF model; (2) Handle available observational datasets and develop/apply assimilation techniques to efficiently use available measurements into numerical models to reduce the effect of boundary errors and model uncertainty; and (3) Establish forcing boundary fields for nesting to be used in other farm-scale numerical models (e.g. large eddy simulation). The above components aim to provide: Quality controlled and ready-to-use wind and wake data for other work packages in the CONWIND project. The work will be carried out in close cooperation with other activities in the CONWIND project together with Norwegian and Chinese project partners. The work will be an integral part of the activities at the Bergen Offshore Wind Centre.

About the Project

Understanding the wind field upfront and inside large offshore wind farms is crucial for optimum operation of the wind farm. To improve this understanding the interaction between several complex processes must be investigated, such as the interaction between the turbulent wind field, the effect of ocean waves, atmospheric stability and the wake behind the individual turbines. The importance of these issues increases as the size of the turbines and the wind farms increase.
