Qualification Details

  • Education as PhD in hydraulic engineering. Long experience with research in hydraulic engineering along with a MSc degree in hydraulic engineering or similar may compensate for lack of higher education
  • Skills and experience in designing and executing hydraulic research in the laboratory
  • Able to participate in and carry out field work
  • Driver’s licence
  • Excellent written and oral English language skills

Preferred selection criteria

  • Experience from experimental work in hydraulic laboratories
  • Experience from design of hydropower and other hydraulic structures

Responsibilities/Job Description

We have a vacancy for a full-time researcher at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway. The position is devoted to research in the domains of hydraulic engineering and structures, hydropower, dams, river engineering, erosion protection, eco-hydraulics, sediment handling, floods and other applied topics in hydraulic engineering.

The work will be conducted within the Hydraulic Research Group The research group runs one of Europe's largest hydraulic laboratories, the NTNU Hydrotechnical Laboratory (NTNU HL), where physical experiments on watercourses and hydropower structures are carried out as part of research projects, study projects or commercial projects.  The NTNU HL is in the process of being upgraded through the HydroCen laboratories project (

to develop a hydraulic laboratory with an infrastructure and instrumentation suited for the hydropower industry and to investigate and solve future societal water related challenges ( new infrastructure in HydroCen laboratories will position Norwegian scientists at the forefront of the international hydropower research.

The researcher will work on a wide range of hydraulic research and commercial projects together with colleagues in the research group.  This includes planning and executing experimental work, as well as field work. Furthermore, the researcher will be actively involved in projects relating to upgrading and development of the instrumentation and infrastructure of the NTNU HL or similar.

You will report to Head of Department.

Duties of the position

Together with the colleagues in the research group:

  • Initiate hydraulic research projects related to hydropower, dams, river morphology, erosion protection, eco-hydraulics, sediment handling, floods and other applied topics in hydraulic engineering
  • Project management, as well as design, implement and report on research projects like listed above
  • Administration and project lead in HydroCen Labs projects
  • Participate in international research and development projects within the field of hydropower and hydraulic engineering
  • Contributing to writing reports and applications for funding of research projects
  • Responding to industry enquiries relating to commercial research projects
  • Supervise students and others in laboratory and field work in hydraulic engineering
  • Contact with the hydropower industry and other relevant research partners
  • Teaching activities (maximum 20%)

Salary and conditions

Position code (researcher code 1108 or researcher code 1109) and salary placement in accordance with agreement, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund,
