About the Department/Section/Group

The Humanities Lab is an interdisciplinary research infrastructure for the entire Lund University located at the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology. More information about the Lab can be found on our website www.humlab.lu.se

The Lab is a dynamic environment that enables researchers to combine traditional and new methods, and to collaborate within and outside the university to meet the scientific challenges that await to understand, explain and improve the human condition. The Lab has about 20 employees and has offices and labs at the Centre for Languages and Literature (SOL) and LUX. The employees have different disciplinary backgrounds and work as teachers, researchers, research engineers, programmers and administrators.

Many research challenges concern text - collection and analysis of text material, visualization, or modeling. It involves everything from making manuscripts machine-readable to linking text to geographical locations through GIS, predicting future words in a large material, extracting information on how a keyword's use changes over time, and modeling language management.

The Humanities Lab is a certified Knowledge Centre within the European Consortium European Research and Infrastructure Consortium Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure (CLARIN ERIC) and a node in the Swedish national consortium for language technology, the Nationella Språkbanken (Swe-Clarin).

To meet the rapidly growing needs for support, guidance and project work, increased expertise is required especially in areas focusing on larger amounts of data such as text visualization, text extraction, subject modeling, automated information extraction, Natural Language Processing (NLP) and methods based on machine learning such as deep learning and word vectors.
