About the Department

Within Wageningen University & Research, Education and Student Affairs (ESA) is the central department that has strategic, policy, executive and support tasks in the field of education. The department matches the supply and demand of education, is responsible for the quality assurance of education and develops and implements education policy. Apart from accredited education programmes, the department develops other educational elements, such as e.g. online education and extra-curricular academic student competitions, to broaden the Wageningen educational ecosystem.  Relevant actors are engaged in the development of these so called Student Challenges, such as the Executive Board, Sciences Groups, and – where relevant – external parties. The ESA department consists of 7 sections, namely (1) NVAO-accredited programs, (2) Open and Online Education, (3) Wageningen Academy, (4) Quality and Strategic Information, (5) Student Service Centre, (6) Education Support Center and (7) a group of employees who support the ESA Director / Dean of Education and the ESA Manager. The department comprises a total of approximately 200 employees. WUR Student ChallengesWUR Student Challenges is a small team of experienced, enthusiastic professionals, dedicated to providing students with the best and most impactful learning journey. We organize an annual ‘Signature Challenge’, and support the organisation of several smaller Challenges. A Signature Challenge is a competition that is open to students worldwide, requires an inter- or transdisciplinary approach to come to a viable solution, is complex and open-ended and runs between 6 and 10 months. All our Challenges are extra-curricular. Extra-curricular Challenges offer an opportunity for ambitious students who want to stretch themselves and are looking for an extra academic challenge beyond their study programme. By participation in such competitions, those students not only develop new skills but also expand and / or deepen their network resulting in new career opportunities. As such these Challenges offer a unique opportunity to recruit newhighly talented students.
