Qualification Details

Engagement within the University of Basel's Sustainable Future research network as well as in national and international research activities are key for this position. Accordingly, willingness to collaborate and lead within the Department as well as within these interdisciplinary networks and the different Master programs is a must. The Sustainable Future network defined three major research fields, in which ideal candidates are expected to situate their work: energy and climate, Geo-Bio-diversity, and digital sustainable worlds. Possible topics may include social science-based energy and consumption research; research on social innovation; well-being, intra- and intergenerational justice; governance of sustainable transitions, changes in institutional settings or issues related to regime resistance.

Additionally, we expect a commitment to pedagogy within the interdisciplinary Master programs, the acquisition of external funding as well as active service in university committees. In addition to English, we expect German language proficiency, or alternatively, the commitment to learn German within two years of appointment.

Responsibilities/Job Description

Ideal candidates pursue groundbreaking research rooted in the social sciences, and have experience in interdisciplinary collaboration with economics and natural science as well as in project-based collaboration with societal actors. We are looking for scholars with an adequate track record in high-ranked international journals, solid experience in empirical research, general command of social theory, and expertise in the theoretical and normative issues pertaining to questions of sustainability.

The candidate will lead the University of Basel's Sustainability Research Group within the Department of Social Sciences, The Sustainability Research Group represents the social sciences within the tri-faculty Master's Degree in Sustainable Development, the University of Basel within the International Joint Master Program in Sustainable Development and sustainability research within the interdisciplinary Master in Changing Societies. The unit is also responsible for the PhD-program in Sustainable Development within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
