Responsibilities/Job Description

Job description

The discipline of the Professor of Practice includes the practice of business ethics and sustainable development, with an emphasis on the banking sector. The Global Financial Crisis of 2008 brought the relevance of financial ethics to the attention. Since then, attention for sustainability in the banking sector has increased, among others owing to the influence of Agenda 2030, the UN Sustainable Development Goals. These developments have led to an increased demand for the development of knowledge at the interface of business ethics and sustainable development, in ways that are practically relevant to the financial sector.

The Professorship is connected with two of the five key elements of the strategic plan of the Faculty of Economics & Business, namely, ‘Future Prosperity and Sustainability’, and ‘Energy Transition and Climate Change’. Societal challenges such as climate change, energy transition, global inequality, and poverty require multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary solutions, with an increasing role for banks and other financial service providers, as is reflected, for instance, in the EU Action Plan Sustainable Finance and the ensuing regulation regarding taxonomy, transparency, and benchmarking.

The Faculty of Economics & Business considers it as a task to integrate these themes in teaching, among others by positioning the UN Sustainable Development Goals more centrally in the programmes it offers. The Professor of Practice will play a role in the design, renewal, and execution of teaching business ethics courses, in connection with the Sustainable Development Goals; will connect with existing research on financial ethics; and will initiate their own research, with an emphasis on the relation with the practice of the banking sector.

Responsibilities and duties

The post includes the regular tasks of a professor by special appointment (bijzonder hoogleraar) regarding research and teaching.

Teaching

The Professor of Practice will contribute within the Faculty of Economics & Business to courses in business ethics and sustainable development, in bachelors, masters, and executive programmes. The Professor of Practice carries out research on the practice of business ethics and sustainable development, in the broad sense as well as from the point of view of the banking world. The Professor connects with existing research projects related to financial ethics, and initiates their own related line of research.

The duties of the incumbent are:

• contribute to teaching business ethics, in the light of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, at the bachelors, masters, and executive levels• contribute to the national and international research reputation the Faculty, specifically in the area of financial ethics and sustainable development• to connect the practice of business with academic research and teaching in the field of business ethics• external fund raising• actively contribute to creating a positive climate within the Department and the Faculty.
