Qualification Details

The successful applicant needs to

  • have a degree in veterinary medicine and license to practice the veterinary profession, a PhD and competence as associate professor (docent) or equivalent academic qualification in the field of domestic animal reproduction
  • have international specialist competence (diplomate) in Animal Reproduction
  • have documented experience as main supervisor at doctoral level
  • be a scholar of distinction within at least one of the sub-subjects of domestic animal reproduction
  • have demonstrated a proven ability to lead and develop a successful research group
  • have a proven ability to obtain external research funding in competition
  • be pedagogically skilled and have the ability to integrate research and scientific approaches into both teaching and other pedagogical work
  • have documented clinical experience of working in the field, with particular emphasis on conditions relevant to Nordic conditions
  • high ability to communicate in written and spoken English.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for appointment as a professor will primarily be based on the degree to which the applicant/candidate possesses the required qualifications specified for the position.

The assessment of research expertise will take the following into account:

  • completed research activities and ongoing research in the field of domestic animal reproduction
  • ability to independently initiate and pursue internationally recognized research
  • ability to obtain external research funding in competition.

The assessment of teaching expertise will take the following into account:

  • planning, conducting and evaluating teaching
  • experience in teaching animal reproduction, both theoretical and clinical, at undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • experience of supervision of doctoral students and examination of students
  • pedagogic vision.

The assessment of clinical expertise will take the following into account:

  • the extent of documented clinical-practical experience concerning reproductive disorders in domestic animals.

Furthermore, the assessment will consider the applicant’s expertise in:

  • develop and managing activities and staff within the academy
  • interact/collaborate with relevant stakeholders and society in Sweden and an internationally
  • ability to disseminate research findings and development projects.

When assessing the candidate’s qualifications, equal attention will be given to teaching and research expertise respectively.

The position will be offered to the person who, after a qualitative overall assessment, is assessed to be most suitable to carry out and develop the above mentioned duties and to contribute to the positive development of the organization.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The candidate should, within the subject area

  • develop and lead internationally successful research
  • actively participate in PhD training and supervising PhD students
  • be responsible for the development of research and education in the whole field of domestic animal reproduction in cooperation with the other researchers and teachers of the Faculty and the University
  • disseminate research findings and contribute with relevant knowledge to society/the public
  • apply for external research funding at national and international level
  • teach mainly in domestic animal reproduction but also in related subjects at undergraduate level
  • develop, lead and actively participate in both theoretical and clinical teaching at undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate level in the whole field of domestic animal reproduction
  • actively participate in clinical work
  • be able to teach in Swedish within four years
  • carry out administrative tasks/assignments within the department, faculty and university
  • develop and maintain national and international networks and collaborations with academia, organizations, and the industry
  • contribute to the strategic development of the department, faculty and SLU
  • collaborate within the department as well as with other parts of SLU including SLU University Animal Hospital (UDS)
  • cooperate with parties outside SLU
  • be responsible for staff and budget within the subject.

About the Project

Domestic animal reproduction includes the sub-disciplines of obstetrics, gynaecology, andrology, reproductive endocrinology and toxicology. The overall objective of Domestic Animal Reproduction is to develop knowledge of the reproductive health and diseases of domestic animals, primarily in the Nordic context. The subject concerns cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, horses and companion animals at the individual, herd and population level.

About the Department

The Department of Clinical Sciences is responsible for undergraduate education, research and postgraduate education in the scientific fields of veterinary medicine, veterinary nursing and animal science. The department's activities mainly concern our common Swedish domesticated animal species with a focus on anaesthesiology, diagnostic imaging, animal care, epidemiology, laboratory animal science, surgery, clinical chemistry, medicine and domestic animal reproduction.
