Qualification Details

  • A doctoral degree in Computer Science (or similar)
  • Advanced knowledge of machine learning techniques
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills
  • Excellent programming skills, Experience with open source development is an asset
  • Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English
  • Creative free thinking, perseverance.

Responsibilities/Job Description

We are seeking a highly creative and motivated postdoctoral fellow to join the Data Mining Group at the Eindhoven University of Technology. The candidate will be working in collaboration with Joaquin Vanschoren and his team develop new meta-learning and continual learning techniques that work well in semiconductor inspection tasks.

Current deep learning models are heavily used in real-world inspection scenarios. Since labeled data is often scarce, continual learning is being explored in order to be able to learn new tasks faster based on other similar tasks. A common challenge here is to quickly adapt models to newt asks without destroying what was learned before (also known as catastrophic forgetting). The goal of this project is to use approaches inspired by continual learning, curriculum learning, and interactive learning to reduce interference to a level acceptable for real-world industry applications.

Secondly, since some semiconductor defects are very rare, we aim to include prior knowledge, as well as on Few Shot Learning, Meta/Automated Learning, NAS, and related techniques, in order to identify rare defects based on very few examples, on combination with data augmentation techniques. This Ph.D. position provides the ideal conditions for tackling these challenges. It is a collaboration with ASM Pacific, a leading company in the field of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, which provides the required infrastructure for collecting data and testing models in the real world

About the Department

Mathematics and Computer Science department

The department provides education at BSc, MSc, PhD and PDEng levels. Besides its own core tasks towards education and research, the department also provides service education for other TU/e departments. Research in thedepartment concentrates on applied mathematics and the design and analysis of software systems. Knowledge valorization takes place through the Project Development Office (PDO). In the education and research areas the department closely collaborates with other universities and companies in both national and international partnerships. The department has approximately 140 tenured staff members, 200 PhD students/postdocs/PDEng trainees and almost 1000 Bachelor/Master students. The department is leading the Data Science Center Eindhoven (DSC/e). In DSC/e 28 research groups join forces to create a world leading research and education program in data science.
