Qualification Details

We are looking for an enthusiastic post-doc. The successful candidate has obtained (or has finished and will soon obtain) a PhD in a relevant discipline, like (health) psychology, (health) communication, health/persuasive technology, public health, or nutrition (and health). You have affinity with experimental (lab and preferably also field) research and excellent methodological and statistical skills. Your English is excellent for both speaking and writing at an academic level. If Dutch is not your primary language, we expect you to speak and write Dutch at a level that allows you to effectively communicate with research participants that only speak Dutch.

Responsibilities/Job Description

This post-doctoral researcher will work within the “NudgeMe” project, which focusses on digital nudges for healthy food choice in retail applications. In this project, empirical, ethical and design perspectives on personalised digital nudging techniques are assessed in the context of an innovative digital nudge type, namely the Just-In-Time nudge (Van der Laan & Orcholska, 2022, Food Quality and Preference). The project is funded by Health~Holland | Top Sector Life Sciences & Health and is a collaboration with the mobile app company Nakko bv.

We offer a 2-year contract at 0.8 fte to investigate the effectiveness and acceptability of personalised digital nudges. More specifically, the post-doc project entails investigating the effects and underlying mechanisms of personalised (as opposed to generic) digital nudges, 2) the impact of transparency (e.g., disclosing nudging or personalisation) on nudging effects, and 3) whether effects hold up in a relevant (field) setting in healthy consumers and Type 2 Diabetes patients. The successful candidate will be responsible for setting up, conducting, analysing, and reporting the experimental studies. The candidate will work on these tasks in a close collaboration with the project consortium consisting of other researchers and the company Nakko bv.

This position is hosted at the department of Communication and Cognition (DCC), Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences (TSHD) and the Tilburg Center for Cognition and Communication (TiCC). Researchers in TiCC explore cognitive and social aspects of human communication through a multidisciplinary approach, combining careful experimentation with survey methods, corpus analyses and computational modelling. Core research domains include (in alphabetical order) communication and technology, cross-cultural communication, information visualization, language production, new media design, non-verbal communication, social media research and strategic communication.

Job description

  • Develop and conduct experimental research
  • Write (at least) two peer-reviewed papers for submission to international journals
  • Give presentations about study results on a regular basis at workshops and conferences
  • Co-organise (project) meetings
