Qualification Details

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has an PhD in a relevant area (microbiology, computer science, etc). It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

It is meritorious to have an excellent track record and experience with microbiology – especially bioinformatics analysis of 16S and metagenomics sequencing. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in working with the human gut/skin microbiome. Advanced use of R or equivalent programming language is mandatory, and candidates should also have publications in peer-reviewed journals in the field of microbiology, immunology or other related field. Previous expertise of the analysis of other OMICs types (e.g. RNA-seq, Single-Cell seq and metabolomics) is considered as an advantage.

Candidates should be highly motivated, independent, and have strong communication skills. Excellent ability to give scientific presentations, write scientific articles and communicate in English is required. The candidate is expected to cooperate in national and international networks. Therefore, a background of working in networks of researchers and international research experience give extra value.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The employment has a focus on research. The candidate will conduct research within several projects, focusing on the impact of host-microbiome interplay during immune homeostasis and dysregulation, using human data and experimental models. The main task of the post-doc will be bioinformatics analysis of 16S and metagenomic data and their integration with environmental exposure data, clinical data and other OMICs layers.

About the Department

The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have.

The mission at the Unit of Systems Toxicology is to perform top quality research to understand how different environmental exposures affect human wellbeing, focusing on the impact of chemicals, allergens and microbes on epithelial barrier function and immunity. We work with human cohorts, experimental models and different omics analysis.

The two-year (100 %) position is available from 1st April 2022 in the research group of Professor Harri Alenius at the Unit of Systems toxicology.
