Qualification Details

You have:

  • A PhD in Communication Science, Health Sciences, or a related discipline;
  • Scientific creativity and productivity, as demonstrated in recent publications in international peer-reviewed journals and peer-reviewed conferences;
  • A sound knowledge of and skills in advanced quantitative statistics;
  • A (proven) interest in interdisciplinary social scientific research;
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • An excellent written and spoken command of English;
  • Preferably = experience with and knowledge of (a variety of) quantitative research methods and statistics commonly employed in communication science;
  • The capabilities of providing a stimulating teaching environment;
  • The willingness to adhere to the principles of Open Science.

Responsibilities/Job Description

As for the research project (75% of your time), you will have two main tasks:

  1. To provide insight in the online food environment, specifically in the (un)healthiness thereof, making use of social media data donation complemented with self-report questions. Also, you will identify potential ways to structurally monitor and/or regulate the online food environment from a public health and legal perspective. There will be opportunities to share findings with a team that is currently working on mapping the physical food environment (shops etc.) and explore policy options combining a public health, legal and policy perspective.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Develop a study protocol and lead data collection;
  • Advanced analysis of (big) data obtained through data donation and self-report questionnaires;
  • Coordinate findings between communication science, public health, legal and policy experts;
  • Writing up findings for publication in academic papers in high-impact scientific journals;
  • Presenting your work at (inter)national conferences.
  1. To create an interdisciplinary community within the UvA around ‘A healthy diet for all’. Specific tasks will include (but are not limited to):
  • Identifying research groups at the UvA who are working on food-related issues;
  • Identifying common themes and topics of interest;
  • Identifying ways to collaborate;
  • Organizing a kick-off meeting;
  • Setting up a sustainable network.

As for teaching (25% of your time), you will teach modules in the standing program of the Bachelor and Master of Communication Science in Dutch and/or English, including theoretical and/or methodological coursework. The Master program is taught in English only. The Bachelor program has both a Dutch and an English track.

This postdoctoral researcher will be a member of the ‘Persuasive Communication’ programme group at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) of the UvA. Also, the postdoc will frequently work with colleagues at the Department of Public and Occupational Health at Amsterdam UMC.

About the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences

The department Communication Science of the faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, in collaboration with the department of Public and Occupational Health of the Amsterdam UMC, is looking for a fulltime postdoctoral researcher who will conduct research (75%) within one of the university-wide themes in UvA’s Strategic Plan 2021-2026, i.e., ‘Healthy future’. This theme includes a focus on diet, under the heading of ‘Towards a healthy diet for all’. In addition, the postdoc will teach courses in our Communication Science curricula (25%).

We are seeking an ambitious person who is interested in multi-disciplinary research combining Communication Science, Public Health, and Health Law & Policy on how the online food environment may impact population diets. As well as in identifying leverage points for change in this online food environment (e.g., policy) to change our diet for the better. Also, someone who would like to combine research tasks with further developing the UvA community that carries out food-related research, as well as with teaching Communication Science courses.

The Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) is the research institute for the Communication Science department at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences.

Our offer

We offer a temporary (one year) fulltime contract (38 hours a week), in which research (75%) is combined with teaching (25%).

The intended start date for this function is 1 september 2022.

The gross monthly salary based on full-time employment (38 hours per week) ranges from €3,821 up to a maximum of €5,230 gross per month. This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus.
