Qualification Details

Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The postdoc will be working on Natural Language Processing (NLP) / Computational Linguistics within a project on typologically inspired multilingual NLP for low-resource languages. The project is funded by a Carlsberg Foundation Young Researcher Fellowship (‘Multilingual Modelling for Resource-Poor Languages’ CF21-0454). The physical location of these positions will be at the Copenhagen campus of Aalborg University. The positions are formally tied to the DKW research group. The goal of the project is to make use of linguistic typology to improve low-resource NLP. In this project, we will dig deeper into the nature of linguistic structure, and how we can make use of these structures in the context of low-resource NLP. This requires a solid foundation of both linguistic theory, as well as artificial intelligence and machine learning. As such, the project leans heavily on interdisciplinarity, and this is expected to be reflected in the profiles in the team. Concretely, we are interested in candidates with a profile ranging from (i) a linguistic focus (with experience in computational linguistics) to (ii) a technical focus, including NLP, machine learning, or artificial intelligence more broadly.

In addition to the postdoc, the project team will also consist of three PhD students, and the principal investigator, Associate Professor Johannes Bjerva. The project offers a large amount of freedom and autonomy in terms of research directions within the umbrella of typologically inspired low-resource NLP. Scientific dissemination is expected to focus on venues such as ACL, NAACL, EACL, EMNLP, TACL, COLING, AAAI, ICML, and the CL Journal.

The successful applicant holds or is close to holds, a PhD degree closely related to computational linguistics or natural language processing. Proficiency in spoken and written English is a requirement. Direct experience in working with truly low-resource multilingual NLP is strongly preferred.

Interested applicants are encouraged to contact Professor Katja Hose, Department of Computer Science, e-mail: [email protected], regarding the scientific aspects of the position.
