Responsibilities/Job Description

The project will be part of the biosensor research activities taking place at Malmö University. Specifically, we are investigating transduction mechanisms based on proteolytic degradation of biodegradable materials. This approach can be implemented in different ways. One is to bridge two electrodes with the biodegradable material. Upon degradation, the resistivity of the medium within the electrodes will go down to that of the surrounding aqueous media. We have implemented this transduction mechanism to detect both proteases (Anal. Chem. 2020, 92, 13110−13117) and bacteria (Electrochimica Acta 381, 138275). The second approach is to coat an interdigitated capacitor with the biodegradable material. Upon degradation, the interdigitated capacitor behaves as a resistor instead. This strategy requires developing materials characterized by (i) a resistivity significantly higher than that of aqueous media, (ii) highly stable in these media to enable long-term monitoring, but (iii) that could still be degradable by proteases. In this project, the applicant will (i) develop materials with these characteristics, (ii) characterize them, as well as their degradation by proteases/bacteria, by means of different surface techniques and (iii) incorporate them in biosensor architectures being developed at the department.

Apart from carrying out research within these areas the applicant is expected to take responsibility for the maintenance of the instruments involved and to be active by supervising graduate and postgraduate students and fellow scientists in the techniques and participate in teaching at graduate and postgraduate levels. In addition, the applicant will be expected to take part in applications for external funding to support research activities.
