Qualification Details

This position requires:

  • A Norwegian doctoral degree (PhD) or an equivalent foreign doctoral degree in gender studies, sociology, sound studies, ethnomusicology, musicology, music, human geography, arts, social/visual anthropology, indigenous studies or similar
  • The applicant must have knowledge of qualitative/artistic/feminist methodology. Having experience from using those methods is an advantage.
  • Fluency in English and candinavian language

It is preferable if you also:

  • Have knowledge of the Sámi language
  • Have good communication skills
  • Are able to think creativly and are open-minded

About the Project

«Arctic Auditories – Hydrospheres in the High North” is an interdisciplinary project based in the Humanities, which seeks to develop strategies for understanding environmental change through sound. The project focuses on water environments and draws on feminist methodologies. Its aim is to deliver innovative, empowering and democratic listening strategies and to cultivate radical ideas about how different forms of engagement can create positive futures.

Arctic waters will be identified, investigated, and represented through techniques of sound mapping. Using interviews and participant observation, the impact of communal, mindful, artistic, and corporeal activities will be analysed. Soundwalks/ -sittings and podcasts will be created, and a museum exhibition co-curated. The collaboration with local communities in Northern Norway/Northern Sápmi is fundamental.The holder of the position will recruit participants, conduct and analyze interviews, gather, process and analyze fieldwork data, conduct background research, create a glossary, create and maintain a webpage, be active in dissemination including social media, and will organize gatherings like workshops in addition to writing texts and articles.

You must submit a project proposal that describes how you scientifically can contribute to the project. The proposal must include a progress plan.

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications based on the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailed description draw up for the position.

The applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview should among other things, aim to clarify the applicant’s motivation and personal suitability for the position. A trial lecture may also be held.
