About the Project

The candidate will actively participate in a project supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The project aims to address the major challenges in live microbial biotherapeutics production by optimizing a technology that enables to produce high-diversity bacterial consortia. It builds on the years of experience of the group and on recent proof-of-concept data. The project is led by the ETH Zurich and is in close collaboration with partners in private sector.

The Laboratory of Food Biotechnology is part of the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Health at the Department of Health Science and Technology. We are specialized in gut microbiota research and functional microbes for food and health applications. A particular area of development is the design and application of novel fermentation and downstream process technologies of strict anaerobic bacteria, including the development of high cell density continuous cultivation strategies of single strains, consortia and complex artificial gut microbiota in bioreactors.
