Qualification Details

To qualify for the position, you should have completed a PhD degree in mathematics or equivalent, by the application deadline. Exceptions may be made for special reasons, for instance parental leave or military service. Fluency in English is required. The assessment of your application will be based mainly on your scientific skills. You are expected to provide evidence of excellence in research. The applications will be assessed by a local recruitment committee at the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Experience in some of the following areas is meritorious: analytic number theory, arithmetic statistics, the analytic theory of L-functions and statistics (of some form) in families of L-functions.

Responsibilities/Job Description

You will work in the research area of low-lying zeros in families of L-functions and related areas. Of particular interest are various families of automorphic L-functions and geometric families of Artin L-functions. You are expected to contribute by developing new ideas both independently and in collaborations. You should be highly motivated and independent. Your ability to collaborate and communicate will be taken into account in the assessment.Teaching, possibly including supervision of students’ independent work, may be part of your duties up to an extent of 20%. Our teaching languages are English and Swedish. As most of our teaching is in Swedish, the options will vary according to your language skills. Chalmers University of Technology offers courses in the Swedish language.

About the Department

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg has about 200 employees, and is the largest department of mathematics in Sweden. The department has three scientific divisions, Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability Theory, and Applied Mathematics and Statistics, and successful research in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical statistics in a wide range of research areas is cunducted. We are located in a modern building at the center of the Chalmers campus. Our department continuously strives to be an attractive employer. More information about us can be found on our website: the division of Algebra and Geometry we conduct research in areas such as algebraic and complex geometry, various aspects of number theory, algebra and representation theory, complex analysis, and mathematical physics. This includes analytic number theory and in particular the analytical theory of L-functions. We are looking for one post doctor in mathematics to work on the following project together with associate professor (docent) Anders Södergren at the division of Algebra and Geometry.Information about the project: Low-lying zeros in families of L-functionsThe main goal of this project is a detailed investigation of several fundamental problems in analytic number theory. The focus is on low-lying zeros in families of L-functions and on verifying various aspects of the influential Katz-Sarnak heuristic that relates the distribution of low-lying zeros in families of L-functions to the distribution of eigenvalues close to 1 in compact matrix groups. An additional goal is to investigate questions related to the non-vanishing at the central point in families of L-functions of arithmetic interest. The project is financed by a grant from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. Outstanding applications from all mathematical research areas will be considered. Precedence will however be given to those who have a research profile compatible with the project description.
