Responsibilities/Job Description

Work description

This position is part of a partnership between BTH and several industrial partners, which enables close collaboration between the candidate and industry very early in his/her research work. The employment includes mainly research in software engineering with a focus on software architecture and technical debt. Up to 20% of the total work time may be related to other tasks, e.g., teaching. The applicant is expected to participate actively in the department's research and educational activities.

Many software organisations aim to become better at delivering software faster, being more effective and efficient in their processes, while keeping the quality of the products and services they deliver. Nowadays, the development of software-intensive products and services has become a collaborative endeavour, in which organizations organize the development around teams who are responsible for the development and maintenance of micro-services or components. In this context, understanding the impact that the organization of the architecture, the team constellation and their alignment have on the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization and the quality of the delivered product and services is crucial. Technical debt is further a metaphor, borrowed from economics, that helps organizations reason about the wellness of their development processes. The position is centred around these thematic areas.

Our tradition of close cooperation with industry means that we particularly value an interest in and experience from empirical research in collaboration with industry. For this position, we are looking for a candidate with a background in empirical software engineering, with a quantitative perspective, and professional software development with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Devising and utilising data-driven approaches to evaluate software architectures and development processes using existing artefacts (e.g., mining code repositories, using technical debt tools, etc).
  • Statistical approaches to data analysis as well as data analysis tools (e.g., using Python or R).

The teaching includes lectures, practical elements, course development and supervision at all levels. There is also the opportunity for supervision of doctoral students as a part of career development. The teaching at undergraduate level is mainly in Swedish, while the teaching at graduate and postgraduate level is mainly in English. We expect a non-Swedish-speaking employee to acquire sufficient knowledge of Swedish within three years to be able to teach in Swedish and communicate with the university's units/ functions in Swedish.
