Qualification Details

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent), preferably in the field of numerical fracture analysis with an outstanding academic record.

Furthermore, excellent English language communication skills are essential. Applicants should be highly motivated, ambitious, and eager to seek and share scientific knowledge, willing and able to work as part of a team as well as through interdisciplinary collaboration with industrial partners and partner universities. Applicants with a proven record of international collaborations will be favored. Only applicants with great talent and a possibility to be among the brightest in their field will be considered. Positions are available immediately, and applications will be evaluated on an ongoing basis until the position is filled. The salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience.

More specifically, you should have the following qualifications:

  • Strong background in solid- and fracture mechanics.
  • High competence in numerical fracture based fatigue analysis in steels.
  • Experience with commercial finite element software packages Abaqus and Zencrack as well as competent programming skills in e.g. Python, Fortran or C++ is an advantage.

Responsibilities/Job Description


Fatigue remains a challenge for the design and maintenance of welded offshore structures. The research position is concerned with the development of advanced numerical 3D discrete fatigue analysis methods for welded joints with complex geometry and boundary conditions.

The postdoctoral fellow will be part of a large project with the purpose to provide insight on the fatigue performance of welds in large structures with respect to the area of offshore application. Through model development and a general reduction of model uncertainties, the project will enable more reliable and cost efficient fatigue design, maintenance, and repair. To achieve this goal the advanced numerical tools will be jointly integrated into a comprehensive fatigue testing campaign and hybrid simulation. The successful candidate will join an ambitious international research team with members from the Technical University of Denmark, Aalborg University and the Danish Offshore Technology Centre.

Your primary responsibilities and tasks will be to:

  • Establishing an automated parameterized numerical fatigue crack growth simulation procedure using the commercial software packages Zencrack and Abaqus.
  • Model validation against fatigue test data and conducting sensitivity studies of the key parameter space.
  • Employ machine learning models to simulate a vast number of cases for probabilistic analysis.
  • Disseminate the results in top-tier peer-reviewed journals.

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
