Qualification Details

We are seeking a highly motivated postddoctoral student eager to make a difference in these problems, with a good technical background in Computer Science, good programming skills, and some experience in AI/ML areas such as planning, logic and knowledge representation, combinatorial optimization and SAT, deep learning, and deep reinforcement learning.

Please make sure to explicitly address these qualifications in your application; namely, whether you have a background in CS theory, logic, and algorithms, and what is your research experience in these areas. Candidates whose CS/AI expertise is just in deep learning applied to vision or natural language, will not be considered.Postdoctoral students pursue their research on specific themes that are a function of their background, skills, and interests, and the needs of the project.

To be qualified to take employment as postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree.  This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you.

It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree – such as taking statutory leave – then these may be taken into consideration.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The Department of Computer and Information Science was founded in 1983 but its roots go back to the early 1970s. It is one of the largest computer science departments in northern Europe. Our research covers a broad spectrum of fields, from core to applied computer sciences. Its vast scope also benefits our undergraduate and graduate programmes, and we now teach courses in several engineering programmes at bachelor’s and master’s levels, as well as the programmes in statistics, cognitive science and innovative programming.Read more at

Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment. The program addresses research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems acting in collaboration with humans, adapting to their environment through sensors, information andknowledge, and forming intelligent systems-of-systems. The vision of WASP is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software for the benefit of Swedish industry. Read more:

Work assignments

The postdoctoral student will carry out research directed by Hector Geffner, a Wallenberg Guest Professor in Artificial Intelligence at LiU, and recipient of an Advanced ERC Grant on representation learning for planning (RLeap, 2020-2025).

The research is focused on a problem that is at the heart of the current split in AI between data-based learners and model-based reasoners: the problem of learning models from data, and more generally, the problem of learning representations from data over known formal languages with a known structure and semantics. While these representations are to be learned using deep learning methods, the use of domain-independent target languages for learning is aimed at obtaining representations that generalize and can be reused, and which are more transparent and require less data. In the setting of action and planning, language-based representations have been used to represent general dynamics, general control strategies, and general subgoal structures (intrinsic rewards), among other types of structures. See the paper "Target Languages (vs. Inductive Biases) for Learning to Act and Plan" (AAAI 2022) for details (

As postdoc, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.
