Qualification Details

For appointment as Postdoctoral research fellow, the applicant requires a Norwegian doctoral degree within a relevant field or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree. Aditionally, you must be able to document relevant research experience for the project. Documented fluency in English is required.

Additional relevant research experience is an advantage, but not mandatory. The applicant is expected to describe some preliminary thoughts about the project in no more than one page as part of the application.The candidate should have practical experience with computing and programming, preferably in data analysis environments such as STATA or R. Familiarity with interdisciplinary research, complex systems, epidemiology, and/or -bioinformatics is beneficial, and experience analyzing data from the Tromsø Study or the NOWAC cohort is also considered an advantage.

Qualification with a PhD is required before commencement in the position. If you’re at the final stages of your PhD, you may still apply if you have submitted your PhD thesis for doctoral degree evaluation within the application deadline. You must submit the thesis with your application. You must have dissertated before the start-up date of the position.

In the assessment, emphasis will be put on the submitted works, the brief project description as well as on the candidates experience from popularization/dissemination, policies and project management. Moreover, the candidates motivation, potential for research and personal suitability for the position will be assessed.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The position is a fixed term position for a duration of three years. However, the position might be extended to four years if the candidate is involved in teaching at the department. The position can additionally be assigned to teaching and related work for UiT in an amount equivalent to a maximum 25 % of a full-time employment. Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant is able to carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed-term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.

The appointed Postdoctoral Fellow must have its daily workplace at UiT - The Arctic University of Norway, but the candidate is expected to work in periods at the partner institutions.

About the Project

The “Healthy Choices” Project is a five-year project which started in January 2020, and the overall objective is to provide new insight into the complex interrelationships between health-related choices, the social gradient and modifiable risk factors, as well as building actionable knowledge among the public and decision makers to reduce inequalities in health. This position is part of WP3/WP 4 where the primary focus is to explore how socioeconomic status (SES), social capital, psychosocial and behavioral factors and biological markers are interrelated and related to health outcomes in a life course framework combined with the characterization of all risk factors including biological markers.

The project involves data and samples from the Norwegian Women and Cancer Cohort (NOWAC) and the Tromsø Study. The NOWAC and the Tromsø study are both cohorts managed at the Department of community medicine at UiT, and more information about the cohorts can be found here and here.
