Qualification Details

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).The successful candidate is expected to have experience and expertise in one or more of the following subjects:

  • Good knowledge of high-power and high-energy lasers;
  • Experience with hollow-core fibers;
  • Experience with microscope technologies (e.g., photoacoustic imaging) ;
  • Experience with weak voltage signal process;
  • Familiar with Matlab coding and image process.

Candidates are required to have excellent communication skills in English (both written and spoken) and a proven ability to work independently, as well as to plan and carry out complicated tasks.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The overall focus of the project will be the development of a photoacoustic microscope system and detection of microplastics using this system. The applicant’s responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and characterizing the laser source to be used as the central component of the microscopy setup;
  • Designing, building and characterizing the photoacoustic microscopy system;
  • Preparing and characterizing the microplastics samples;
  • Signal post-processing and image reconstruction.

In completing these tasks, you will work side-by-side with colleagues having state-of-the art knowledge in lasers, fiber, and imaging technologies.

About the Project/Department

This postdoc project, funded by a Villum Experiment 2021, aims to develop a unique system for high-resolution and fast detection of microplastics in aquatic environment using the photoacoustic modality. The emerging gas-filled fiber laser technology will be used as light source, to generate high-energy laser pulses targeting the strong absorption bands of microplastics compounds. Therefore, our group is seeking a highly motivated and talented postdoc candidate willing to work on a challenging scientific project in a serious but also friendly and team-work oriented environment in the fields of fiber optics, laser technology and photoacoustic microscopy.  This post-doc position is 1 year with possibility of extension, in the Neural Devices and Gas Photonics (NDGP) Group at DTU Fotonik, Department of Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark.

DTU Fotonik has 220 employees with competences in optics. In a typical year, DTU Fotonik educates 30 PhD students from more than 25 countries and our student numbers are constantly growing. As one of Europe’s largest public photonics research departments, DTU Fotonik covers a multitude of optical disciplines ranging from fundamental light-matter interaction and optical telecommunications to applied research and innovation.
