Qualification Details

You have academic qualifications at the PhD level, preferably within one or more of the following areas virology, immunology, or neuroscience. Previous documented experience with genome-wide screens or CRISPR/Cas9 technology is an advantage. Experience with culture of neurons and/or animal models for brain diseases is also seen as an advantage. You should have solid analytical thinking, creativity, and a visible publication record. We offer a dynamic, ambitious, and productive environment for a young scientist, and a good platform for a future career in frontline research. You will report to Professor Søren Riis Paludan.

Responsibilities/Job Description

Virus infections in the brain can cause acute disease (encephalitis) and prime for longterm pathologies (e.g. neurodegenerative diseases). Therefore, the brain needs to have efficient antiviral mechanisms in place to restrict virus replication. Currently, there is limited knowledge on how neurons and glial cells control virus infections without activating inflammatory activities, which can also cause pathology. To identify novel mechanisms of cell-autonomous antiviral activity in neurons, we will use genome-wide CRISPR screens and neuron cell models. Focus will be on neurotropic herpesviruses. Identified candidates will be mechanistically characterized, and experimentally tested in mice and organoid systems.

As Postdoc in infection biology and neuroscience your position is primarily research-based but may also involve teaching assignments. You will contribute to the development of the department through research of high international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with colleagues on your project, where you will receive supervision and guidance. The work related to the project will take place at Department of Biomedicine. Your main tasks will consist of: Independent research of high international quality, including publication.
