Qualification Details
Applicants need to have a PhD and a background in environmental microbiology, microbial physiology, or related fields demonstrated by scientific publications. We are looking for a highly motivated and curiosity-driven candidate. Working experience with stable isotope labelling techniques or with microsensor and optode measurements are of advantage. Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory.
Responsibilities/Job Description
Ammonia-oxidizing archaea are key players in the nitrogen cycle of the world’s oceans. They are frequently found in oxygen-depleted environments like marine oxygen-minimum zones or sediments though they are thought to have a strictly aerobic physiology. We found evidence for a so far undiscovered intra-aerobic metabolic pathway in a cultured representative. The aim of the postdoctoral project is to further characterize the ecophysiology of oxygen production in ammonia-oxidizing archaea. Depending on the applicant’s background different research directions are possible such as:
- Identification of the activity and distribution of this process in the marine environment
- Identification of the enzymes catalyzing the different steps in the novel pathway.
