Qualification Details

To qualify as a post-doctoral scholarship holder, the post-doctoral fellow is required to have completed a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree. This qualification requirements must be fulfilled no later than at the time of the decision about scholarship recipient.

Priority should be given to candidates who completed their doctoral degree, according to what is stipulated in the paragraph above, no later than three years prior. If there are special reasons, candidates who completed their doctoral degree prior to that may also be eligible. Special reasons include absence due to illness, parental leave, appointments of trust in trade union organizations, military service, or similar circumstances, as well as clinical practice or other forms of appointment/assignment relevant to the subject area.

In addition, it is required to have fundamental knowledge about transmission system protection, power quality, phasor measurement units, and machine learning in power systems, including supervised and unsupervised methods, SVM classifiers, signal processing, and feature extraction methods. Furthermore, good skills in English and programming skills such as MATLAB are also required. A good ability to effectively collaborate with others to develop new scientific understanding is also required. High qualification in research, including publishing in journals and international conferences, is a merit.

Responsibilities/Job Description

In this project, we will work on improving the function of the electricity transmission protection system, which ensures that continuous electricity is supplied to large areas within Europe. The power-system protection of the transmission system of electricity is set up in such a way that it will almost always clear a fault. Together with a system of back-up protection and operational reserves, this has resulted in an extremely reliable power transmission system. An often forgotten, mostly minor, issue is that the protection is activated when there is no need to do so. The overall goal of the research project is to address the problem of maloperation of distance relays under load encroachment conditions and to prevent the huge separations of transmission systems. In this way, the data obtained from phasor measurement units should be processed by machine learning methods to generate a supervisory signal for the existing distance protection. So, we will take advantage of the latest developments in machine learning, signal processing, and monitoring systems for large areas.

The project is a national and international collaboration between Umeå University, Luleå University of Technology, University of Maribor (Slovenia), and Polytechnic University of Milan (Italy). Therefore, the successful applicant will be given the opportunity to develop independent research ideas within the scope of the project.

The fellowship, financed by The Kempe Foundations, is full-time for two years.
