Qualification Details

Our ideal candidate holds a PhD in environmental engineering or similar and has experience with environmental microbiology and biological wastewater treatment, has an open mind to develop new ideas and is eager to collaborate with the project partners. The following qualifications are considered as an advantage:

  • Experience with environmental microbiology and biological wastewater treatment
  • Experience with operation lab-scale bioreactors
  • Experience with LC-MS or GC-MS
  • Publishing in peer-reviewed journals
  • Developing and writing project proposals

Where experience is lacking, the candidate must be motivated to learn and will get the opportunity to develop new skills. Excellence in both written and spoken English is a requirement.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The demonstration project Sludge2Fuel will turn sewage sludge, a waste stream from wastewater treatment, into biofuel. The project will implement the first full-scale hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) plant at the wastewater treatment plant of Fredericia, Denmark. HTL, a process resembling the geological formation of fossil crude oil, converts wet biomass such as sewage sludge into biocrude oil. However, HTL produces an aqueous waste stream containing high levels of dissolved organic matter (about 50 g COD/L) with potential inhibitory effects to the microbial communities and processes in the wastewater treatment plant or with detrimental effects to the effluent water quality. This project aims to investigate options for bioremediation of this aqueous waste stream.Specific tasks are:

  • Investigate biological treatment of HTL wastewater using lab-scale bioreactors and in full-scale
  • Investigate effects of HTL wastewater on microbial communities and processes in lab and full-scale
  • Chemical (LC and GC-MS of micropollutants and HTL compounds) and toxicological (in vitro bioassays) profiling of HTL wastewater before and after treatment and in final effluent in lab and full-scale
  • Working and reporting in a team with several academic and industrial partners
  • Supervision of master and bachelor students
  • Publishing peer reviewed papers

About the Department

The research group ‘Microbial Technologies for Clean Water’ specializes in processes at the interplay between microorganisms and pollutants in water. One of the focus areas is the development of biotechnologies for recovery of valuable resources from wastewater. We investigate and exploit the variety of biochemical processes that are catalysed by microorganism by combining approaches from the fields of environmental chemistry, microbiology and biotechnology. Currently, the group consists of 3 postdocs, 1 PhD and master and bachelor students.The Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering has strong biotechnology research areas within industrial biotechnology, environmental and process engineering, industrial microbiology, modelling of biological processes. The successful applicant will be working with biotechnology and will produce and disseminate knowledge and research results about the biological and chemical basis of relevant processes. Translation of results into solving relevant societal problems within environmental issues, health and industry is a highly prioritized part of our work.
