Qualification Details

The applicant is required to have a PhD degree in either Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or similar. The applicant must have completed the degree no more than three years before the end of the application period.

Specific requirements for the position include good knowledge of systems of systems engineering, model-based systems engineering, and software engineering. For the safety direction investigation, knowledge of safety analysis, safety contracts (both static & dynamic) and safety cases is required. For the work on ontologies experience safety engineering and novel system-analysis methods such as ontologies is meritorious. For the design space exploration direction of investigation, knowledge of system dynamics and simulation is required.

The applicant should be fluent in English, both written and spoken. Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organization.

Merit

Knowledge of ontologies, modelling, GSN and similar techniques, contract formalisms, exposure to saftey standards, game theory and software development

Responsibilities/Job Description

We are offering one or two postdoc positions in analysis of systems of systems, focusing on safety analysis or design space exploration.

Safety Analysis: The postdoc would be involved in the investigation of e.g., safety requirements analysis, safety modelling and safety assurance of complex systems of systems, all in the context of use cases related our industrial partners. The analysis should be connected to processes for acquiring and demonstrating safety guarantees at the safety integrity levels mandated in such systems. One possible focus area for a postdoc is the traceability of safety cases and linking them to the evolution aspects in a seamless manner adapting/developing appropriate tool-chains. Another focus area for the postdoc is investigating the applicability of a safety ontology on an autonomous quarry-site use case, development of a combined safety & security ontology for hazard analysis and investigating the applicability of the combined safety & security ontology on a system of systems use case.

Design space exploration: The postdoc will work on the development of analysis methods and synthesis techniques to support design space exploration for systems of systems (SoS). The core problem relates to understanding the dynamics that result from the interactions between independent constituent systems (CS) of the SoS. The independence of the CS means that they will decide which of their capabilities to use, based on their own situation awareness and perceived objectives. However, this can result in non-optimal situations, where selfishness of CS not only reduces the value of the SoS as a whole, but can lead to failed objectives also for the CS. The postdoc will investigate these dynamics using static analysis techniques as well as simulation, primarily using system dynamics and agent-based techniques. The synthesis part consists of finding improvements to the SoS, e.g., by creating mediators to improve situation awareness of CS, or to adjust the incentives through value transfers. The research will be driven by examples from domains such as transportation, construction, disaster management, etc., that are developed in current and previous projects.
