Qualification Details

You should have a PhD degree or equivalent in the field of electrical engineering, metrology or mechatronics.

  • Experience in working with AFM and data processing.
  • Experience in the instrumentation of scanning probe microscopy.
  • Experience in LabView programming/hardware hacking is a plus.
  • Experience with AFM bioimaging or high-speed AFM is a strong plus.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams, self-motivation, responsible conduct of experimental work and good organizational skills are a must.
  • Previous experience in the industry in research and development is an additional plus.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The postdoctoral researcher will work in the area of atomic force microscopy (AFM) that links to dermatology. AFMs can measure tape-stripped corneocytes nanotexture without any sample preparations. The number of circular nano-objects yielded a biomarker called dermal texture index (DTI). Furthermore, clinical studies revealed that the DTI is closely associated with skin barrier function.

However, conventional AFMs suffer from low throughput at a high cost and limited usability in a clinical setting. We have pioneered a unique OPU based AFM instrumentation and we would like to integrate DTI analysis for skin barrier function assessment in this project.

The postdoctoral researcher will work on the AFM scanner, imaging sensor, OPU hardware interfacing circuits, software control of the measurement, simple AFM data treatment and DTI integration. We encourage a hardware hacking spirit that we can use parts from consumer electronics to speed up the development process, lower the cost and achieve the best performance at the same time.

  • You will design and develop the interfacing hardware circuits and the control software for the Dermal AFM.
  • You will integrate the machine learning based DTI algorithm (from our collaborator) into the Dermal AFM system.
  • You will measure the skin samples from our collaborators with the Dermal AFM.
  • You will test the Dermal AFM in the clinical setting.
  • You will analyze the correlation between other skin assessments results.
  • You have the ability to drive the project and achieve ambitious goals.

The work will be carried out within the framework of the Center of Excellence – IDUN (www.idun.dtu.dk). In IDUN, our motto is ‘bringing science to life’ and we believe in openness, inclusiveness, having ambitions, making a difference and collaboration.

You will play a role in the sensing part of the research section, interacting with several members working in different disciplines, such as biology, microfabrication, pharmaceutical science and polymer science. The project is highly interdisciplinary and we expect that you enjoy teamwork and are good at coordinating you work with your colleagues.
