Responsibilities/Job Description

The great majority of electricity worldwide is generated through electric generators. Electric motors then consume approximately 30% of that electricity. Do you want to achieve sustainable climate change? Then it would be best if you worked on improving the usage and efficiency of electric machines.

Today, only 20% of electric machines are driven by frequency converters – the so-called electric drives. The share increases daily due to the evident efficiency benefits and the development of electric transportation, renewable energy sources, and robotics, which cannot exist without electric drives. KTH wants to be part of this growth and contribute to the improvements in this research field, leading to a more sustainable society.

The position belongs to the division of Electric Power and Energy Systems at the school of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The focus is on developing control algorithms and voltage modulation solutions to achieve a total loss minimization in the system composed of an electric machine, a frequency converter, and a mechanical load. Particular attention will be given to the effects of voltage and current harmonics, their impact on electric losses, and the electric loss balance between the frequency converter and the electric machine. Electromobility and robotics are primary application areas.

In addition, there will be a collaboration with the other doctoral and master's students currently working on different projects in electric machines and drives. The position will be linked to the Swedish Electromobility Centre, where the division has a co-leading role in Theme 2 (Electric Drives and Charging). SEC also offers many industrial contacts.
