Qualification Details

We are looking for applicants with a strong academic background who have completed, or are about to complete, a PhD in control engineering, electronic engineering, signal processing, physics, applied mathematics or a related field. The PhD thesis must have been submitted for evaluation before the application deadline and approved before entering into the position. Eligible applicants are required to have a record of scholarly publication.

A high level of proficiency in English must be documented or demonstrated (e.g., via publications, interview and/or language test; Acceptable tests are TOEFL, IELTS, and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)).

In the assessment the following criteria will be emphasised:

  • the quality and relevance of your publications, and capacity for work
  • background or interest in systems and control
  • experience with mathematical modelling of physical systems
  • experience with optimisation and estimation (i.e., model-predictive control)
  • organisational and project management skills
  • motivation and potential for research within the field
  • your network, history of mobility and ability to cooperate with other researchers
  • experience and enthusiasm for experimental work
  • ability to work independently and in a team, take responsibility and be accountable, solve problems and be creative and innovative

Responsibilities/Job Description

The project aims to develop methods for digital-to-analogue conversion enabling a dynamic range in excess of 1 part-per-million, at high speed and with low latency, using advanced control theory and dithering techniques in combination with the latest CMOS fabrication technology. This level of performance has never been achieved before and will define the new state-of-the-art in the field.

High-resolution digital-to-analogue conversion and control has a wide array of applications, including adaptive optics, semiconductor lithography, fabrication, and inspection, laser interferometry, metrology (measurement science), imaging and manipulation in microbiology, chemistry, materials science, and scanning probe microscopy in general. Furthermore, methods relating to analogue-digital conversion will have major impact in renewable energy production and distribution, and communications technology.

The group you will be joining has used dithering techniques to build the highest resolution digital-to-analogue converter known in the literature and will serve as the starting point of the current project. The project is a collaboration between the University of Stavanger, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Aalborg University, Justervesenet (Norwegian Metrology Service) and Eindhoven University of Technology, as well as The University of Newcastle, Australia.

The objectives for this position are to develop mathematical models of digital-to-analogue converters and control schemes for optimal switching of output elements, focusing on:

  • developing models amenable to mathematical analysis
  • model comparison with existing commercial CMOS simulation tools
  • applying model-based, optimal control schemes, e.g., model-predictive control
  • developing sub-optimal control schemes with low computational load (e.g., dithering)

The overall objective for the postdoctoral fellowship is to strengthen research capabilities at the university and to provide the opportunity to advance competences, qualifications and career.

About the Department

The Faculty of Science and Technology offers study programs at bachelor, master and doctoral level. The faculty has established close cooperation on research with NORCE (Norwegian Research Centre AS) and the regional industry. A number of master's and doctoral theses are made in collaboration with the industry. The faculty has established research collaborations with universities in the US and Europe, and has developed several academic environments that are at the forefront internationally. The faculty has about 2,800 students and approximately 400 employees at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Department of Structural Engineering and Materials Science, Department of Mathematics and Physics, Department of Energy and Petroleum Engineering, Department of Energy Resources and the Department of Safety, Economics and Planning.

Department of Energy and Petroleum Engineering carries out research and offers study programs at all levels in Drilling Technology, Natural Gas Technology, Petroleum Engineering and Energy Technology. The department has established close research collaboration with the Norwegian Research Centre AS (NORCE) and the oil industry. The department focuses on internationalization, with development of English lingual study programs and high mobility among academic staff and students. There are currently 90 employees including research fellows and postdocs, and 750 students at the department.
