Qualification Details

The required qualification is a doctoral degree or a foreign qualification deemed to be the equivalent in chemistry, or geochemistry, or the equivalent. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the closing date of the application. A candidate who has completed their degree prior to this may be considered if special circumstances exist. Special circumstances include absence due to illness, parental leave or clinical practice, appointments of trust in trade unions or similar circumstances.

Good oral and written proficiency in English are required.

Practical experience in (vibrational, X-ray) spectroscopy and/or molecular modelling (molecular dynamics or ab initio methods) are considered valuable assets. Experience in advanced data evaluation (MATLAB, R, Python) and/or thermodynamic modelling are not mandatory but will be viewed favourably.

You are interested in geochemistry and inorganic chemistry, and have demonstrated abilities at thinking at the molecular level. You are a logical thinker, thorough at work, and able to work independently. The candidate must have the ability to work both independently and in collaboration in groups, and take all initiatives needed to pursue a 2-year project.

About the Department

The Department of Chemistry at Umeå University is one of the largest departments within the Faculty of Science and Technology with approximately 200 employees and with strong and expanding research. The Department has three major research areas: Biological Chemistry, Environmental and Biogeochemistry, and Technical Chemistry. We are also a strong partner of the Chemical and Biological Centre of Umeå University.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2020 was awarded to Emmanuelle Charpentier, who was active at Umeå University when the CRISPR-Cas9 method was developed.

Project description

The project is on the (photo)chemistry of nanometric water and ice films on minerals, and will use (vibrational) spectroscopic and/or possibly computational modeling techniques available at Umeå University. It will be conducted in the Molecular Geochemistry group of Professor Jean-François Boily (https://moleculargeo.chem.umu.se/boily/).

The fellowship is for two years, starting no later than September 1rst, 2022 or according to agreement. The tax-free stipend is 300 000 SEK per year, and financed by Kempe foundation.
