Qualification Details

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions.

  • The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in social science preferably sociology, political science, or equivalent education
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
  • Applicants who have not yet completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) but are close to finishing are eligible to apply but must have completed their degree by start of employment.
  • Good oral and written communication skills in Norwegian/Scandinavian and English. The candidate must have the necessary language skills in order to conduct field work in Denmark and Norway. The position is included a 3-9 month research stay in Germany.
  • The quality of the PhD project sketch (1,500 words maximum)
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant  

Preferred selection criteria

  • Experience with application of scenarios and foresight analyses is an advantage.
  • 1-2 years relevant experience in research, such as dissemination and participation in research project, is advantageous.

•    Personal qualifications such as independence, well organized, initiative, cooperative spirit, and motivation to contribute to an including work milieu will be ascribed high importance.

Responsibilities/Job Description

  • The PhD-position is connected to the research group “Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development”, and is a part of the Ruralis project “CIVIC Renewables”. The aim of “CIVIC Renewables” is to explore how different organizational forms and ownership can enhance processes developing renewable energy. The overarching research issue is if and how policy processes anchored at the local level, can contribute to a more socially, economically and environmentally sustainable development of renewable energy, and thus reduce the level of conflict connected with renewable energy. Wind and hydro power will be the main foci, but other forms of energy are also relevant.
  • CIVIC Renewables will concretely: (1) Analyze examples of different solutions with respect to local renewable energy and electricity distribution, incomes and benefits in Denmark and Norway. (2) Examine whether beneficial experiences can be used also in other contexts. (3) Assess how local renewable energy processes can be optimized to attain professionality and capture synergies.
  • The position is included a 3-9 month research stay in Germany.
  • The position may be ascribed teaching obligations and extended with up to one year. If so, the teaching will be part of the study programs in the department and/or in the fields political science or in the field ”Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development”. department.

  • transcripts and diplomas for bachelor's and master's degrees. Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level.
  • If you have not completed the master's degree, you must submit a confirmation that the master's thesis has been submitted. Documentation of a completed master's degree must be presented before taking up the position.
  • A project proposal or a research plan for the PhD project (1,500 words maximum)
  • Publications and other relevant scientific work (max. 3 publications)

Diploma Supplement is required to attach for European Master Diplomas outside Norway. Chinese applicants are required to provide confirmation of Master Diploma from China Credentials Verification (CHSI).

Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint works, you must attach a brief description of your participation.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates.

The candidates will be assessed in accordance with the (1) the quality and the potential of the project sketch, (2) quality and relevance of the scientific production og (3) possible contributions to the research group and the department.

About the Department

We conduct research, teaching and dissemination in sociology, political science, media, communication and information technology, and sport sciences. The Department offers five-year master’s programmes in teacher education (lektorutdanning) in social sciences as well as in physical education and sports. As a social science department we have a special obligation to contribute to the public debate on important social issues. The Department of Sociology and Political Science is one of seven departments in the Faculty of Social and Educational Sciences.
