Responsibilities/Job Description

This PhD position in environmental social science is concerned with the socio-cultural aspects of green transition. The PhD scholar will be part of a larger project that investigates how media and informal learning feed into and shape pro-environmental transition processes. This aim is pursued with a focus on vacation practices. Thus, the project seeks to develop an in-depth comprehension of people’s potential adoption of climate friendly vacation forms, the socio-cultural benefits such vacation forms may provide, and the barriers they are likely to encounter. The project integrates the academic fields of environmental sociology, communication and learning, utilizing practice theory and actor-network theory as theoretical entry points.

Empirically, the project focuses on two groups of vacationers: young adults and the 50+ segment. We will employ a mixed methodology to explore the imaginaries, desires, competences and material conditions that influence vacation practices. The quantitative approach of surveys is combined with the qualitative approach of focus groups, semi-structured interviews, and journals kept by a handful of respondents in each age group. Furthermore, netnographic and qualitative content analysis will be applied to investigate how climate concerns and vacation imaginaries are represented in conventional and social media items. These items are selected on the basis of respondents’ media habits and their sources of inspiration for vacation desires. Together, these studies will uncover the ties between media content, informal learning and people’s lifeworld. The scholar will be involved in all phases of the project, but will in particular have the task to analyse vacation and travel practices of young adults and the role of social media in inspiring and shaping these. With full support from the entire project team, the scholar is expected to engage in the development of theoretical and methodological approaches and in empirical studies of young vacationers and their media sphere. The project is funded by Independent Research Fund Denmark and involves 3 senior staff members from 3 departments at Aarhus University: Environmental Science, Business Development and Technology, and Danish School of Education. Please check the project homepage at https://projects.au.dk/clifvac/.
