Qualification Details


To be eligible for third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet both the general and, where applicable, specific entry requirements.

A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle studies if he or she:1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad

Specific entry  requirements to be qualified for admission to third-cycle programme in Computer Science and Engineering the applicant is required to have obtained a second-cycle qualification. The orientation of the student’s degree shall have a sufficiently close connection to the subject of the third-cycle programme. Equivalent requirements apply to individuals who have been awarded their degree in a country other than Sweden.


In selecting between applicants who meet the general and, where applicable specific entry requirements, their ability to benefit from third-cycle studies shall be taken into account.

You are highly motivated, self-propelled, energetic, independent and with a well-developed analytical problem-solving ability. As a person, you are empathetic, loyal and have high ethical standards.

The ability to work in a team as well as to systematically work within a project environment and its deadlines is desirable.

Documented practical experience from working with several of the following topic areas is meritorious: cloud-systems, cyber-physical systems, distributed systems, or AI/ML. Furthermore, documented practical experience with Linux, containerization-technology, or system programming languages like C/C++ is considered meritorious as well

Fluent in English (both verbal and in writing) is mandatory. Swedish is not a requirement, but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The department of Computer Science and Engineering is strongly international, with approximately 300 employees from over 30 countries. The department is a fully integrated department with the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology as principals. The position is placed in the Division for Interaction Design and Software Engineering at the department, with the University of Gothenburg as the employer.

Located in Gothenburg – Sweden’s second-largest city – the department is surrounded by a vibrant ecosystem of software-intensive companies, such as Volvo Cars and Volvo AB, Ericsson, ABB, Boeing, and SAAB Aeronautics. The department is connected to three science parks in Gothenburg for industrial collaborations in fields including intelligent vehicles and transport systems, mobile internet, energy, nanotechnology, and life sciences. Alumni and members of the department have also created many startups, including revolutionary companies such as Spotify.With over 20 faculty members, the Division of Interaction Design and Software Engineering is arguably one of the largest software-engineering institutes world-wide, conducting research at the highest international level in topics such as model-driven engineering, testing, software product lines, empirical software engineering, requirements engineering, autonomic computing, and cloud computing. The division has hosted past international conferences such as EASE 2022, ICSE 2018, SPLC 2018, ICSA 2017, and REFSQ 2015.  For industrial research, the division hosts the Software Center, an associated institute with a network of five universities and ten global companies including Siemens, Axis, and Jeppesen.

The successful candidate will conduct research under the supervision of Professor Christian Berger and work in tight collaboration with world-class researchers in the Software Engineering Division at Chalmers and University of Gothenburg. In particular, the division has a strong interesting in AI for Software Engineering, Cyber-Physical Systems, and Autonomous Driving, with several faculty members, Postdocs and PhD students working in this area.

Job assignments 

Third-cycle studies comprises four years of full-time studies and leads to a doctoral degree. Those who are employed as doctoral students must primarily devote themselves to their doctoral education. However, a doctoral student may to 20 percent of full-time work over the study period work with so-called departmental service in a teaching or supporting role, which can be concentrated on certain parts of the year depending on the needs of the business in consultation with the student. At the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the doctoral student is expected to work with departmental service and primarily participate in teaching at the undergraduate and advanced level. If departmental service is performed corresponding to 20 percent of full-time study time, the employment contract is extended by the corresponding period, which gives a total employment of five years.

The purpose of the education is for the doctoral student to acquire the knowledge and skills required to be able to conduct independent research in the field of service, and to contribute to the development of knowledge in the subject by writing a scientific dissertation. The doctoral education is in total 240 higher education credits and includes thesis work corresponding to 180 higher education credits and courses corresponding to 60 higher education credits.

The successful candidate will collaborate in research network consisting of senior researchers and further PhD students from Chalmers and KTH in the SSF-funded project SAICOM (cf. This project will undertake a research plan where AI, software, and 6G wireless will be investigated in symbiosis. SAICOM focuses on the access protocols at low layers, and the services at the application layer that are particularly sensitive to the low layers’ performance, such as almost any mobile application, services for autonomous vehicles, smart grids, or smart city monitoring systems.

This PhD project will conduct research in the area of Digital Twins/Hybrid Twins to monitor, maintain, and evolve software-defined cloud-supported cyber-physical systems. One key challenge to overcome therefor are automated orchestration and management of AI-enabled software-defined network units to enable such flexible and continuously evolving software solutions at scale. The successful candidate will participate in project meetings and will support in preparing scientific publications. The proposed work requires presence at the premises of the collaborating project partner, and therefore the candidate must have good social skills and collegial qualities.

After admission to third-cycle studies you will be appointed to doctoral studentship. Regulations for employment of doctoral students are given in SFS 1993:100. The initial appointment may apply for no longer than one year. An appointment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. A person may be appointed to a doctoral studentship for a total of eight years. The total employment period may, however, not exceed the time corresponding to full-time third-cycle study for four years.

Salaries for doctoral students are regulated in a local agreement at the University.
