Qualification Details

A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if the applicant:

  • has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
  • has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
  • has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

A person meets the specific admission requirements for third cycle studies in Mechanical Engineering Sciences if the applicant has:

  • at least 90 credits of relevance to the field, including at least 60 second-cycle credits, or;
  • a second-cycle degree in a relevant field

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Assessment criteria

Selection for third-cycle studies is based on the student’s potential to profit from such studies. The assessment of potential is made primarily on the basis of academic results from the first and second cycle. Special attention is paid to the following:

  1. Knowledge and skills relevant to the thesis project and the subject of study.
  2. An assessment of ability to work independently and to formulate and tackle research problems.
  3. Written and oral communication skills.
  4. Other experience relevant to the third-cycle studies, e.g. professional experience.

Other assessment criteria:

  • Good knowledge of Production Engineering.
  • Comprehensive experience in the area of metal cutting, and particularly master thesis on this topic is extra meritorious.
  • Experience on modelling and simulation of machining processes.
  • Industrial experience of metal cutting is meritorious.
  • Courses or otherwise attained knowledge on automation and artificial intelligent is meritorious.
  • Ability to work with information gathering, analysis, and documentation within the described field.
  • Good proficiency of Swedish language.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant, through his or her experience and skills, is deemed to have the abilities necessary for successfully completing the third cycle programme.

Responsibilities/Job Description

Subject description

The Mechanical Engineering Sciences subject is interdisciplinary in character with a large emphasis on industrial applicability. The current profile area within Mechanical Engineering Sciences includes studies on production processes, machines, methods, and their use in industrial production systems. The research area includes among other studies of models which describes different kinds of manufacturing processes such as metal cutting, forming, casting etc., and monitoring, optimizing, simulating, and controlling these processes.

Work duties

The work duties are multidisciplinary and include among other sustainable machining of aluminium alloys with focus on machinability, tools, and quality. The work duties also include drilling of carbon fiber composites and other fiber-based composite materials with advanced tooling solutions such as PCD and diamond coated tools. Machining of material stacks (carbon fiber, glass fiber, etc.) with aluminum- or titanium alloys are also included. The work duties also include modelling and simulation of these matching processes with the aim of creating a descriptive and predictive models. Finally, the duties also include the development of an efficient AI-solution for unmanned (automated) inspection and analysis of process results (quality, tolerances, surfaces, defects, etc.).

The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties will also include teaching and other department duties (no more than 20%).

About the Employer:

Terms of employment

Only those admitted to third cycle studies may be appointed to a doctoral studentship. Third cycle studies at LTH consist of full-time studies for 4 years. A doctoral studentship is a fixed-term employment of a maximum of 5 years (including 20% departmental duties). Doctoral studentships are regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), chapter 5, 1-7 §§.
