Qualification Details

You have graduated at Master’s level in e.g. systems development/systems science, industrial engineering, transport and communication systems, risk management, cognitive science, design science, or computer science, or completed advanced courses of least 60 ECTS, whereof 30 ECTS has to be a thesis. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way. Applicants are expected to have very good English skills, orally and in writing. Basic abilities in reading and understanding Swedish are also required.Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and suitability.

Responsibilities/Job Description

Volunteers are increasingly seen as societal resources, in Sweden and internationally, including emergency management, first response and crisis management. You will be a part of the research programme “Effective Response at the Future Incident Site” which is carried out at the Center for Advanced Research in Emergency Response (CARER), an inter-disciplinary research environment at LiU  (https://liu.se/forskning/carer). The specific focus for the Ph.D. project is how to use volunteers as first responders at the incident site, including organizational development, systems development, planning, logistics, resource management, design/prototyping and evaluation of IT-support for volunteers.

You will have some flexibility in designing your own Ph. D. project and are at the same time expected to collaborate with other researchers at the department and in CARER. You can have a background in, for example, systems development, information systems, logistics, communication systems, risk management, organizational/business development, design science, cognitive science or computer science. The Ph. D. project will involve both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Knowledge in both types of methods is thus deemed meriting. Knowledge of the application domain emergency and crisis response is also meriting but not necessary.

As a doctoral student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.
