Project: Individuals with psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia have an increased risk of developing metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus related to e.g., lifestyle factors and side effects from medications. Still, research suggest that they do not receive the same quality of physical health care compared to other patient groups. There have been national initiatives to promote the physical health for persons with psychotic disorders to reduce health care inequalities, but health promotion focusing on physical diseases has not been properly established within Swedish psychiatric care. More knowledge is therefore needed regarding patients and staffs’ experiences of health promotion activities. Also, evaluation using nationally representative data focusing on diabetes related health and care outcomes in people with psychotic disorders is needed.

The project aims to map and compare diabetes related health and care outcomes in patients with psychotic disorders, as well as to describe patients, staffs, and managers' experiences of health promotion activities within psychosis care. The purpose is to contribute with new knowledge regarding the physical health status of patients with psychotic disorders as well as to identify facilitators and obstacles for health promotion work. The project will be using national register data including the Swedish National Diabetes Register (NDR). Using nationally representative data, inferences can be made about objective health measures (e.g., HbA1c, blood lipids) and diabetes care measures (e.g., proportion of conducted diabetic eye screenings and foot examinations). Interviews with patients, staffs and managers in outpatient care can illuminate their experiences of the clinic's current way of working with patients’ physical health and identify suggestions for improvements. As a PhD student, you will collect and analyze national register data. In addition, you will analyze already collected and transcribed interview data. You might also collect and analyze additional data pertaining to the interviews. We are looking for a candidate who can work independently but also productively with others. You are expected to be proficient in English, both orally and in writing. Since a part of the PhD project consists of interviews in Swedish, proficiency in the Swedish language is central.
