Qualification Details

Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who have completed a second-cycledegree, have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

Special eligibility for admission to postgraduate education in Gender Studies is completed courserequirements of at least 30 credits in Gender Studies at advanced level, of which at least 15 creditsconsist of graduate work at advanced level or equivalent knowledge acquired within or outside thecountry.

Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships.

When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80.

Application process

The application must contain:

- Research plan in Swedish, regarding the proposed area of research (max 5 pages excluding references).

- Personal letter, CV and diploma.

- Contact information from two references.

- Essays/other publications possibly other qualifications relevant to the employment.

Assessment

The most important basis for the assessment of this position is:

- the ability and potential in conducting qualified research (the applicant's master thesis and other written documents and their connection to the focus of the research, methods and overall aim).

- The applicant shall have experience from working with either religiosities and gender studies, or religious studies and gender and sexualities.

- The applicants shall have knowledge about two or more of Muslim, Jewish, Sami and Catholic traditions of faith.

- Proficiency in verbal and written Swedish is a requirement.

Experience of at least one of the following is a merit

- religiosities and secularities.

- heteronormativity, lgbtq+ negativity and minority stress.

- justice-based activism.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The PhD programme runs full time and the student will pursue the requirements of the PhD degree and actively participate in department activities.The position as a PhD student is a four-year full time employment that may require teaching or other departmental work up to 20%, which may lengthen the overall duration of the position to maximum five years.

The Department of Gender Studies has a well-established tradition of working within the fields of Queer and Trans studies. The call is open for research applications that seeks to bridge these academic fields with studies of religion and religiosities. The Department welcomes research proposals that attends to the transformative aspects of religion, and which itself also may be subject to transformation.

The PhD Student will be included in a research project funded by FORTE (ID no 2021-01970), Liveability at the crossroad of religion, gender and sexuality. An ethnographic study of religious and social barriers encountered by LGBTQ+ people across diverse traditions of faith.

The aim of this project is to examine the religious and social barriers encountered by LGBTQ+ people of faith across Muslim, Jewish, Catholic and Sami religious traditions in Sweden. The purpose of the project is to illuminate the effects of internalized lgbtq+ negativity and heteronormativity and identify what makes, and could make, spaces livable for LGBTQ+ people of faith.

We are now inviting applications for 1 position as PhD-student, appointed to conduct research within the project, individually as well as in collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI). We seek to recruit a PhD-candidate with a motivation to conduct high quality research and with previous knowledge of Muslim, Jewish, Sami and/or Catholic communities in Sweden and an interest in gender and queer studies.
