Qualification Details

Third-cycle studies are equivalent to four year full-time and lead to a Degree of Doctor. Those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primarily devote themselves to their studies. Those appointed to doctoral studentships may, however, work to a limited extent with educational tasks, research and administration (departmental duties). Before a PhD degree has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20 per cent of a full-time post.

Eligibility

To be eligible for third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet both the general and specific entry requirements.

A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle studies if he or she:1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad

A person meets the specific entry requirements for third-cycle studies in Medical Science if he or she has successfully completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies

Assessment

In selecting between applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements, their ability to benefit from third-cycle studies shall be taken into account. The assessment shall attach particular importance to documented qualifications for:- specific knowledge and skills within the subject area and related research fields- experience of scientific theory and relevant research methodology- scientific analysis and presentation verified through thesis, degree project, scientific journals or the like.

Documented experience with experimental laboratory work, bioinformatics/computational biology, experience with microbial community analysis or experiments, as well as previous work in the microbiological field or with human cell lines, is of value.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The PhD education in Medical Science comprises carrying out a scientific project and completing at least 30 credits of courses at third-cycle level. The doctoral student must also write a scientific compilation thesis or monograph corresponding to at least 120 credits. For more information about third-cycle studies at Sahlgrenska Academy, see https://www.gu.se/en/sahlgrenska-akademin/doctoral-studies

About the Project

Project title: Disturbances to Interactions in Microbiomes – The roles of antibiotic exposure and colonization with non-community members

Humans carry billions of mostly beneficial microbes forming what is called our microbiome. This project aims to uncover interactions between the bacteria in these microbiomes that are important for community stability and resilience to being colonized by pathogens. In addition, the project seeks to unearth which environmental and genetic factors that are important determinants of bacterial invasiveness and community stability.

The project will apply a combination of high-throughput molecular methods and established theories developed for macro-organism ecology to decipher the mechanisms behind interactions in microbial communities. To reduce the confounding variability of natural systems and avoid excessive animal experiments, we will use model communities representing different compartments of the human microbiome. These will be grown in relevant artificial environments representing, for example, both luminal and epithelial lifestyles. Using these systems, the student will investigate how disturbances in the form of antibiotic exposure change the interactions in microbial communities, evaluate the effects of disturbances on the ability of established microbial communities to withstand colonization by a new species or strain, and identify genes that contribute to successful bacterial colonization in established microbial communities.

The project will provide the foundation for future in vivo studies of microbial community stability in the human, animal and environmental microbiomes. Knowledge of how disturbances influence bacterial interactions in the human body will improve our understanding of the unintended impacts of e.g. antibiotics treatment and will shed light on when and why bacteria, particularly opportunistic pathogens, cause infections. It also holds the key to preventing imbalances in the microbiota, so called dysbiosis, which is a causative factor of many human diseases, including colon cancer, depression, IBS and IBD. Since we work in an international environment with many international collaborators, it is necessary for the candidate to have excellent communication skills, written and spoken, in English.
