Qualification Details

Successful applicants to the PhD position must either have a relevant Master’s degree in Nanoscience, Chemistry or Physics, or equivalent or have completed a bachelor’s degree in Nanoscience, Chemistry or Physics and be expecting to have completed around 12 months of a 2 years master’s degree relevant for admittance as a 4+4 PhD student. Competences in materials fabrication will be an advantage but not obligatory.

About the Project

The PhD project aims to design and test use plasmonic metamaterials for use as nano-optical structures  surface coatings of window glass to control solar thermal energy entry into buildings.

Solar photons can provide lighting and heating solutions for buildings, reducing the climate impact of buildings, however overheating during midday sun is challenging, often leading to energy use on air-conditioning/building cooling. As part of the shift to climate appropriate technologies (green transition), this PhD project will design novel materials based on plasmonic metamaterials to enable window materials to react to solar conditions and dynamically block solar thermal entry when needed and without the need for user energy input.

In our group we have studied basic plasmonic concepts and developed plasmonic materials for optics, bio and chemical sensors and as energy materials. This applied plasmonics project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF) as part of the green transitions programme and will be carried out in collaboration with the Danish window manufacturer Velux.

The research approach will be to combine cleanroom-based fabrication with electrodynamic simulations to drive the design and demonstration of a new form of dynamic plasmonic metamaterial. The project will apply advanced concepts in solid-state and optical physics, surface chemistry and energy materials.
